FULLERTON, Calif. ? A slow start by the Roadrunner men's soccer squad led to an early 2-0 deficit and despite a reenergized second half, CSUB fell 3-1 to Cal State Fullerton Sunday night.
The Titans (6-8-2 overall) got off to a quick start on their home turf, putting the ball in the back of the net just 5:23 into the game. Amir Shafii collected a shot that had been blocked by a ?Runner defender and blasted it into the right corner of the net from 20 yards out to give CSUF an early 1-0 lead.
At the 23:08 mark, CSUB's Steve Trojanowski saved a shot by German Moreno, but knocked it back into play where Moreno was able to knock the rebound back into the net.
Down 2-0 at the start of the second half, Bakersfield found some life and put the pressure on the Titans' defense. Nearly 15 minutes into the half, Manny Garcia and Joe Polifroni hooked up for a perfect give-and-go and the season's first goal for Polifroni.
Bakersfield pressed forward late in the game, looking for the equalizing goal, but with less than two minutes remaining, the Titans' Shay Spitz put the game away with a goal into the right corner of th net off a pass from Moreno.
After giving up an 11-5 shot advantage in the first half, the Roadunners' equaled Fullerton's seven second-half shots.
Trojanowski had eight saves for CSUB, six in the first half while Brent Douglas made three saves for Fullerton.
CSUB, now 3-9-4 on the season, heads north to Oregon State on Nov. 3 before returning home to close out the season on Nov. 10 against Alabama A&M.
