SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield allowed another early goal on Sunday and it ended up hurting the Roadrunners as they settle for a 1-1 draw against Cal State San Bernardino at Premier Field.
The five-match, 10-day road trip that took Bakersfield from the extreme north of California at Humboldt State as well as three matches in Southern California ended nearly the same way it started: By allowing an early goal. And both of those early goals ended up hurting the Roadrunners.
On Sept. 8, Bakersfield opened its current road trip at Sonoma State and gave up a goal just 46 seconds into that match and the goal stood up in the Roadrunners' 1-0 defeat — their first of 2006. On Sunday, the early goal came about 30 seconds later when San Bernardino's Tim Lanski scored just 1:14 into the match when he touched a cross from Lorenzo Loson inside the near post for the very early 1-0 lead.
It took until the 61st minute before Bakersfield could equalize, but it did when Lyle Martin scored his team-best sixth goal of the season on an assist from Towa Manda. Manda stole the ball in the midfield, broke down the right sideline and sent in a cross where Martin was waiting with a header into the back of the net for a goal.
Manda now leads the team with five assists, and four of those assists have been on Martin goals. Manda and Martin have also hooked up for goals in each of the past two matches.
Goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski made six saves and earned the draw, but came up biggest in the two extra periods when he made three of his six saves. San Bernardino goalkeeper Lucas Pepi made four saves for the Coyotes.
The Roadrunners were outshot by San Bernardino by a narrow 11-10 margin with the shots in the two extra periods being tied at four apiece.
Bakersfield returns home on Tuesday and will look to continue its good fortunes at home when the Roadrunners host Western Washington in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. Bakersfield opened the season at 3-0-0 at home before heading out on the long road trip.
