Toros Crush Roadrunners In Women's Soccer

CARSON, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke has been able to get her Roadrunner to play at an extremely high level this season. Now she will need to work on getting her team to play at that high level consistently.

The reason for that is that the Roadrunners struggled Friday night at Toro Field as Cal State Dominguez Hills cruised past Bakersfield by a huge 6-0 margin.

Bakersfield showed just one weekend ago that it can play at that high level with a 5-1 win over regionally-ranked Cal State Stanislaus. But that quality was lacking on Friday, and it will be a match that will go down in history as one to forget for the Roadrunners.

Not only was the six-goal losing margin the most against Cal State Dominguez Hills, it was also the largest losing margin in school history. The previous such mark was five goals in a 6-1 loss at UC San Diego in 2004.

Amazingly, it appears that the match was closer than the final scoreline indicated. Bakersfield was outshot by the Toros, but only by a narrow 16-13 margin. Both teams were able to put seven shots on goal as well. But it was Cal State Dominguez Hills that finished, putting six of its seven shots on goal into the back of the net.

It was the combination of Corrie Hirokawa and Rachele McDonald that made the difference. Hirokawa scored the first Toro goal and finished with two goals and one assist. McDonald had a hat trick and finished the match with three goals and one assist.

Bakersfield goalkeeper Kayleigh Peaker allowed all six goals in her first career start while making one save. Ashley DeAlejandro and Rachel Rood combined for the shutout for the Toros.

The Roadrunners play their final road match on Sunday when they travel to No. 5 nationally-ranked UC San Diego.
