Fremont Star Greg Crane Signs With Cal State Bakersfield

December 1, 2005

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling program scored a key recruit during the early signing period as Head Coach T.J. Kerr announced that Fremont High School standout Greg Crane has signed a national letter of intent to wrestle for the Roadrunners next season.

Crane, who finished fifth in the CIF State tournament last season after his second consecutive Central Coast Section title, returns for his senior season at Fremont as the top–ranked wrester in the state at 160 pounds according to thecaliforniawrestler.com. He also is ranked No. 20 in the country in that weight class in the preseason poll by themat.com.

As a junior, Crane posted an overall record of 41–7 and earned all–area first–team honors by the San Jose Mercury News. In addition, he was a freestyle and Greco state champion and earned fifth place at Cadet Nationals in Fargo, ND.

“We are pleased to have a quality wrestler like Greg join the wrestling program here because he comes form a tough, hardworking high school wrestling program,” said assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Mike Mendoza. “We expect big things from him and would like to see him in the lineup when we host the Pac–10 tournament next year.”

Crane, who is expected to wrestle at 165 pounds, joins three current Bakersfield wrestlers to come from Fremont HS where former Roadrunner Bobby Soto is the co-Head Coach. Most notably is senior Anthony Baza, a 2005 NCAA Division I qualifier who is currently ranked No. 9 nationally at 149 pounds.
