Navy Outguns Roadrunners, 30-13

Novmber 12, 2005

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.— The US Naval Academy wrestling squad won seven of 10 matches en route to a 30–13 win over Cal State Bakersfield in the Roadrunners’ season opener Saturday afternoon at the Icardo Center.

Bakersfield put its best foot forward against a solidly conditioned Navy squad which appeared to be already in midseason form. On the other side, the Roadrunners put six wrestlers on the mat who were seeing their first real collegiate action including three freshmen.

Sophomore Jeremy Doyle (Ramona, Calif./Ramona HS) got the Roadrunners on the board in the second match of the day, scoring a 15–1 major decision over Spencer Manley at 141 pounds. Doyle completely dominated the match, building an 11–0 lead before Manley was able to escape. Doyle nearly scored a technical fall in his first match of the season, but was given just two point for a near fall despite the referee counting to five.

A pair of seniors for the Roadrunners evened the match with wins at 165 and 174 pounds. Brian Busby (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) picked up six points after Craig Dziewiatkowski was unable to continue after hurting his ankle early in the first period. Christian Arellano (Moreno Valley, Calif./Canyon Springs HS), who entered the match ranked No. 14 in the country, picked up his first win of the season with a hard–fought 6–1 victory over Matt Stolpinski at 174. It was the first match for both at their new weight classes.

Despite losing their matches, a pair of true freshman looked strong competing in their first collegiate matches at Bakersfield. Zack Bigboy (Minneapolis, Minn./Kennedy HS) took his first college start into overtime before losing 4–2 to Alex Usztics at 125 pounds. Bigboy had a number of chances to pick up points with his best chance coming at the end of the first period. He managed to grab one of Usztics’ legs and brought him down at the edge of the mat, but did not move behind him quick enough as the period ended before two points could be awarded.

Freshman Colton Nichols (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) looked impressive with a number of quick shots and strong reversals, but in the end made a few bad decisions which allowed Andrew Adams the chance to score the fall with just one second remaining on the clock.

Navy, which defeated Cal State Fullerton by a 29–6 count on Friday, downed UC Davis 23–13 in the second match Saturday to run its record to 3–0 on the season. The Roadrunners fall to 0–1 overall.

Bakersfield returns to the mat on Saturday (Nov. 19) as the squad takes part in the Cal State Fullerton Tournament in Fullerton, Calif. The ’Runners next home match is the annual Blue/Gold intersquad scrimmage on Tue., Nov. 22, at 7 p.m.
