DAVIS, Calif. — The Cal State Bakersfield swim teams split at double dual meet at NCAA I UC Davis Saturday afternoon with the men narrowly defeating the Aggies 152–148 and the women dropping a close cal 164.50-126.50 at the Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis.
For the Roadrunner men’s swim team, the dual came down to the final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, with UC Davis holding a slight one–point lead. But the CSUB relay quartet of Mark Soho, Seth Dawson, Mike Trujillo and Piotr Gegotek easily swam an impressive time of 1:24.24 to give the ’Runners the four point victory.
Gegotek, the defending NCAA II national champion in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, was the leading point–winner for CSUB, winning the 200 free at 1:40.90 and finishing a close second in the 100 butterfly at 51.52.
Trujillo and Dawson also picked up individual wins for the ’Runners with Trujillo cruising to an easy win in the 50 free at 21.48 and Dawson earning a victory in the 100 free in a time of 47.13.
Freshman diver Ross Farance won the 3-meter diving competition with 246.90 points.
The CSUB women faced a tough day to take on UC Davis as the Aggie women broke two school records and winning eight of the 16 events, but sweeping four of them.
Loni Burton, the 2004 NCAA II National Swimmer of the Year, was the leading point–scorer for the ’Runners, winning the 50, 100 and 200 free events.
Laura Lafranchise picked up two wins herself, sweeping the diving events by taking the 1-meter competition with 251.93 points and the 3-meter with 286.20.
Merylie Giguere also had a strong day, winning the 100 fly in 59:10 and placing second in the 100 free and 100 back. She was also a part of the 200 freestyle relay team that touched first to end the meet.
The Cal State Bakersfield swim teams return home for a dual meet with Cal Baptist beginning at 1 p.m. at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
