TEMPE, Ariz. The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling teams picked up two wins in three matches Monday night at the Sun Devil Duals at the Wells Fargo Center on the Arizona State campus in Tempe.
The Roadrunners cruised to easy victories in their first two matches, downing NAIA No. 6ranked EmbryRiddle 376 and beating Utah Valley State 413. However, after a furious comeback, Cal State was unable to hold off Pac10 rival Arizona State, losing a nail biter, 2019. The Roadrunners are now 72 in dual meets, 31 in the Pac10.
Junior Christian Arellano (Moreno Valley/Canyon Springs HS), senior Efren Ceballos (Mateca HS) and senior Matt Sanchez (Gilroy/Iowa State) each earned three victories on the afternoon to lead the way. Arellano opened the day with a pin and a major decision before holding on for a hardfought 43 win over Arizona States Patrick Pitsch at 165 pounds.
Sanchez also picked up a pair of bonus point wins, scoring a technical fall against Matt Ripplinger of Utah Valley State and a major decision over Arizona States John Espinoza.
Ceballos, who entered the day ranked No. 8 nationally, headlined a couple of matches, beating NAIA No. 7ranked Richard Byrd of EmbryRiddle 102 and NCAA I No. 9ranked Jeremy Mendoza of Arizona State 75.
The feature match between the Sun Devils and the Roadrunners looked like it might be a blowout after ASU won four of the first five matches, jumping out to a 163 lead at the midway point. But the Roadrunners responded, winning the next four matches to give them a slim 1916 lead going into the final match.
The dual came down two a grudge match between the Pac10s No. 2 wrestler, Brian Stith, and No. 4 Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS). But the match was all Stith from the outset as he took Busby down just 15 seconds into the match and built up an 83 lead at the end of the first period. He extended his lead to 124 after two periods needing to hang out to score the four point win and a one point victory for the home team. Busby managed to ride Stith the entire period and came close to scoring some back points at one point, but Stith fought hard and earned the major decision, giving the Sun Devils the win.
We just failed to score extra points during the match and they seemed to get them just at the right time, said CSUB assistant coach Mike Mendoza. Our guys wrestled pretty well against a tough Arizona State team and it was a great match, they just beat us out in the end.
The Roadrunners will spend the night in Los Angeles before flying out to the 25th Virginia Duals Friday and Saturday, Jan. 1415 in Hampton, Va.
