BAKERSFIELD, Calif. The gold team jumped out to an insurmountable lead as it won six of the first seven matches while scoring bonus points in all but one en route to an easy 2515 win over the blue team in the annual intrasquad wrestling meet Tuesday night at the Icardo Center.
The match was close through the first two matches as the marquee wrestlers for both teams won early victories for their squad. Efren Ceballos (Manteca, Calif., Mateca HS), who entered the match ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division I, picked up five early team points for gold with a technical fall over Juan Rodas (Vista, Calif./Fallbrook HS) at 125.
Matt Sanchez (Gilroy, Calif./Iowa State), who began competition undefeated and ranked No. 5 in the country, brought the blue team within one point, earning a major decision witha 145 win over Jeremy Doyle (Ramona, Calif./Ramona HS), who wrestled well against the 2004 All-American.
The blue team won the next five matches including four via major decision.
Newcomer Anthony Watson (Waterloo, Iowa/University of Iowa) had no trouble with Brandon Doyle (Ramona, Calif./Ramona HS) at 149, picking up the 176 major decision while showing off his amazing quickness.
Brian Busby (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) dominated David Garcia (Azusa, Calif./Bishop Amat HS) in a battle between two juniors at 157, nearly pinning him twice in the opening period and not allowing Garcia to score in an 110 shutout.
The most entertaining match of the evening came at 184 as senior Scott O'Rear (Bakersfield. Calif/Centennial HS) held off freshman Brandon Ceremello's (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) furious late charge and 118 decision. O'Rear dominated the match in the early going, nearly pinning Ceremello twice and picking up 2:08 of riding time in the first period alone. But the tide turned midway through the second period as the young freshman picked up a reversal after another near-pin and then picked up two himself in the third period before O'Rear was saved by the horn.
Other winners Tuesday night included Daniel Alejandro (Hesperia, Calif./Sultana HS) at 141, Christian Arellano (Moreno Valley, Calif./Canyon Springs HS) at 165, Jason Carrasco (Shafter, Calif./Shafter HS) at 174, Bryan Travers (Escalon, Calif./Escalon HS) at 197 and Eric Parker (Ramona, Calif./Ramona HS), who took it to freshman Jon Woody (Yuba City, Calif./Yuba City HS) a lesson with a 26-11 major decision victory at heavyweight.
CSUB returns to action on Sunday when the victors of this evening's match take on CSUB's wrestlers of old in the Alumni Meet. The match will begin at 2 p.m. at the Icardo Center.
