Ryan Cisterna joined the CSU Bakersfield baseball staff as an assistant coach in summer of 2017.
“Ryan Cisterna offers a strong presence on our staff as our catching coach and will play a major role in our recruiting efforts," said CSUB's Head Coach, Jeremy Beard. "His ability to develop catchers is as good as anyone I’ve been around and is considered one of the nation’s best. His ability to evaluate and recruit players up and down the west coast will impact our program.”
Cisterna comes to Bakersfield after spending six years on the coaching staff at Grand Canyon university, where he primarily worked with the hitters and catchers.
During his playing career, Cisterna was drafted by three different Major League Baseball clubs. In 2006, he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals, but decided to stay in school and attend the University of Arkansas. In 2007, he was chosen in the MLB Draft again, this time by the Washington Nationals.
Cisterna opted to remain a student-athlete with the Razorbacks and he became one of the nation’s best catchers, even getting nominated for the Johnny Bench Award, awarded annually to the top collegiate catcher. He was a member of the Arkansas team that made it to the NCAA College World Series in 2009. After an standout career with the Razorbacks, Cisterna was selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2009. He spent four years in the Angels' organization as both a pitcher and catcher.
