Roberto Hernandez joined the CSU Bakersfield men's soccer staff on Jan. 29, 2020 as a volunteer assistant coach.
Hernandez comes to Bakersfield after serving as the Assistant Goalkeeper Coach for the Los Angeles Football Club (MLS) Youth Academy. While with the LAFC Academy, Hernandez tutored the Generation Adidas Golden Glove Winner, Anthony Campbell, and U-15 Mexican National Team member, Donovan Polamores.
He also served as an assistant with Cal Poly Pomona during the 2019 season and helped lead the Broncos to a 12-5-3 overall record, a CCAA Tournament Championship and a berth in the 2019 NCAA II Tournament.
Prior to his time in Pomona, Hernandez with the lead assistant for both the men's and women's programs at San Diego Christian College, where he had heavy responsibilities in recruiting, budget management, academic support and compliance. Hernandez also served as the head coach for men's and women's soccer at California Miramar University in 2017, as the Fighting Falcons looked to launch its athletics program. He is familiar with the Bakersfield area, having coached goalkeepers for the women's program at Bakersfield College in 2016.
Hernandez also has significant experience coaching at the club and hs levels. He worked as the Assistant Director of Coaching for the Central California Aztecs in 2018 and spent time as a coach with Gompers Prep, Alexander High School, North High School and Antelope Valley High School.
Hernandez played collegiately for Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2013-14 seasons, leading the team to a top-25 national ranking during his two years on campus. He also competed for the University of Antelope Valley and Fresno City College during his collegiate career.
He represented the U20 Guatemalan National Team in 2014 and spent three seasons playing professional soccer in North America, for the Atlanta Silverbacks, the Orange County Soccer Club and Atlanta Futuro FC.
