Gerry Abas

Gerry Abas is in his fourth season and second stint as a member of the CSU Bakersfield Wrestling staff.  He rejoined the Roadrunners in August of 2010 after serving in the same capacity for the Roadrunners during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons.

Prior to arriving at CSUB, Abas was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Fresno State, for seven years following a career that placed him as one of the top wrestlers in program history.

Abas marked his name as one of the all-time greats in California wrestling when he became the first four-time All-American from California, accomplishing the feat from 1992-95. Interestingly enough, the second four-time All-American was Bakersfield’s Stephen Neal, and the third was Abas’ brother Steven, who Gerry not only coached in college but also coached to an Olympic silver medal in 2004.

His 134 career wins put him at No. 2 on Fresno State’s all-time win list. Abas’ name can be found throughout the Fresno State record books. His career win percentage of .870 is No. 4 all-time at Fresno State, and just eight Bulldogs have ever had more wins in a single season than the 41 he had as a freshman in ‘92.

He was also a three-time NCAA Division I national finalist and a three-time WAC champion.

Abas led a resurgence in Fresno State wrestling starting in 1992. From his freshman year forward, the Bulldogs had 11 All-American wrestlers, where previous to that season, Fresno State had just eight in its entire history.
