Coby Wright returned to the Cal State Bakersfield Wrestling coaching staff in Summer of 2023 as an Assistant Coach for the Roadrunners.
Besides a wealth of coaching experience, Wright brings the perspective of a successful student-athlete to CSUB after enjoying a standout career with the Roadrunners from 1994-97. Wright was an integral part of the 1996 team which placed third at the NCAA?Championships, earning All-America honors with a fourth-place finish. The two-time Pac-10 champion followed that up in 1997 with another All-America performance.
Wright's accomplishments on the mat were remarkable, but he also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-American honors twice in his collegiate career. Combining the grit and drive he learned in the wrestling room with a passion for academic excellence, Wright graduated from CSUB and began pursuing a career in public service.
In 1999, Wright joined the Kern County Fire Derpartment and was soon promoted to an engineer. Just a few years later, Wright became a captain of KCFD, a roll he served for the next 17 years. With over 20 years of dedicated service to the Kern County community, Wright now returns to his alma to coach once again.
From 2000 to 2015, Wright also worked as an assistant coach for CSUB, both as a volunteer and in a paid position at times.
