Andrew Atzhorn

CSU Bakersfield Director of Swimming Chris Hansen hired Andrew Atzhorn as an assistant coach in July 2011. In the Summer of 2012, Atzhorn became the Assistant Head Coach at CSUB. 2013 marks the third year for Atzhorn in the Bakersfield program.

Atzhorn will be heading the the distance free and IM groups as well as the breaststroke group. He will also be the recruiting coordinator for both the men and women and oversee the the progression of the diving team and diving coach. Under Atzhorn, Mitchell Huxhold, was named the 2012 MPSF freshman of the year, qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials qualifier, the 2013 US Open, and the 2013 National Open Select Camp.

Atzhorn came to Bakersfield from Huntington Beach, Calif., where he was the head assistant coach for Golden West Swim Club under former US Olympic and National coach Mark Schubert. As a swimmer, Atzhorn swam at the University of South Carolina where he was a 2008 US Olympic Trial Qualifier and a 2009 World Championship Trial qualifier. During his senior season at South Carolina, Atzhorn earned NCAA ‘B’ cut times in the 200 medley, 400 medley and the 800 freestyle relay. He also placed second in the 800 freestyle event at the Gamecock Invitational.

Prior to his retirement from competition, he qualified for the 2012 US Olympic Trials in the events in which he will coach at CSUB.

Atzhorn’s duties also include meet management, program administration and development of Roadrunner Aquatics, a US club operated by Hansen that competes and trains at CSUB.
