Jonathan Matsumura

Jonathan Matsumura is entering his sixth season as the Associate Head Track & Field Coach at California State University, Bakersfield and his 10th overall season at Bakersfield after being hired in 2013 as an assistant coach. Matsumura oversees Sprints, Jumps, Hurdles, Men's 800, Combined Events, and recruiting. 

During his time at Bakersfield, Matsumura has coached three individual Western Athletic Conference champions (Van Horn, 2017 and Threlkeld, 2018, 19) and helped guide four NCAA Western Regional qualifiers (Van Horn, 2017, 19; Flores, 2017; and Threlkeld, 2019), along with 50 All Conference performers.

Matsumura has also had athletes qualify for the USA Track & Field U20 Championships and the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships. In the past nine seasons over 15 athletes have achieved Top 10 program all-time performances in the events he oversees.

In 2015, Matsumura was was a USA Track & Field Master Coach Mentorship Grant Award Winner.

Matsumura came to Bakersfield from Millikin University in central Illinois where he spent the 2012-13 season overseeing Jumps and Combined Events. Seven of his student-athletes earned All-Conference honors while he coached the school record holder in the men's indoor heptathlon.

Prior to his time at Millikin, Matsumura spent two seasons at Texas A&M-Commerce as the graduate assistant coach where he was in charge of Jumps. His student-athletes earned 11 All-Conference honors as well as 10 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks. He also had at least one student-athlete make the NCAA DII National Championship final each season. Matsumura coached A&M Commerce's record holder in women's triple jump (12.55m, 41-02 1/4) as well as the school's second-best all-time long jumper (5.96m, 19-06 3/4).

Before working at Texas A&M Commerce, Matsumura served as an assistant coach at Monterey Peninsula College (2008-09), Hartnell College (2006-08), North Salinas High School (2009-10), and North Monterey County High School (2004-08).

Matsumura earned his master's degree in Kinesiology from Texas A&M Commerce and his undergraduate degree from Cal State Monterey Bay in Behavioral Sciences.
