  • Title
    Pole Vault Coach

Dion Giuliano is entering his eighth season as a volunteer assistant coach for California State University, Bakersfield track and field. He first volunteered in 2014 overseeing Pole Vault, then took the next two seasons off, before rejoining the Bakersfield coaching staff ahead of the 2017 season.

Giuliano guided Miranda Miller to the school's first Big West Conference title in 2022. He coached Miller and three other vaulters (Finch, Schacher, Neptune) to Top 10 program marks over the bar. Miller's school record (14-1 1/4) was also a Big West record and the sixth best height in the West region. She became Giuliano - and the school's - first Division I female athlete to qualify for the NCAA West Regional.

Miller's work on and off the field in 2022 garnered Big West Field Athlete of the Year, Big West Scholar Athlete of the Year, and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All Academic Team honors.

Five of the seven women who are ranked on the program's all-time list hit their marks while coached by Giuliano (Miller, Finch, Schacher, Neptune, Giuliano).

In 2017, Giuliano's first season back at Bakersfield, Julianne Finch reset the school vault record that had stood for 15 years.

In his first season with the Roadrunners, Giuliano had a pair post Top 10 program marks. Kyle Wiggins ranks 10th while Gabby Giuliano, his daughter, ranks seventh all-time in women's vault.

Giuliano brings twenty years of high school coaching experience to Bakersfield’s program. During his time as a high school coach, he led two boy’s teams and one girl’s teams to win valley championships. Giuliano coached 16 state medalists, two state champions, and one national champion. He also guided four junior All-Americans to great achievement on the track and field.

Coach Giuliano received his coaching credential from Sky Jumpers Vertical Sports Club and has coached 15 years worth of vault camps with Jan Johnson, an Olympic bronze medalist (1972, Munich) in the pole vault.

As a competitor, Giuliano was a five-time All-American at CSUN. With a height of 17-06, he still holds the record for the Matadors in the pole vault and has the third-best decathlon score in school history. Giuliano was an Olympic Trials qualifier in the decathlon.

Giuliano has owned his own business for 27 years as a local custom painter and body shop worker. He has been married for 25 years and is the proud father of two daughters.
