CSUB Athlete of the Week: Maalia Cherry

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Maalia Cherry made the most of her two official at-bats to earn Cal State Bakersfield Athlete of the Week honors with a power display that led the Roadrunners to a series victory over UC San Diego this weekend.
The reigning Big West Freshman of the Week hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning and followed with a two-run walk-off blast in the ninth inning for a 6-5 victory over the Tritons in the opening game of a doubleheader on Friday night. She walked three times in the game, was issued an intentional free pass in her three at-bats in the second game and then reached with base on balls in all four plate appearances on Saturday.
For the season, Cherry has 11 home runs and 30 RBIs, and is hitting a team-high .371.
