Miranda Miller Receives Big West Service and Leadership Award

IRVINE, Calif. – Eleven student-athletes across The Big West have been named 2024 recipients of The Big West's annual Service and Leadership Award. Recent graduate Miranda Miller from the Cal State Bakersfield Women's Track and Field team became just the third Roadrunner to receive the award since joining the conference in 2020-21. Other Roadrunner recipients include senior Garrisen Freeman and alum Vanessa Austin of the CSUB Women's Basketball team.

Miranda Miller earned a master's degree in Kinesiology from CSUB this Spring with an impressive 4.0 GPA. Miller was active in the community, putting 89 community service hours in a wide range of events including the Special Olympics, Reading Across America, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Hofman Hospice, and the Bakersfield Marathon. Other volunteer initiatives Miller was active in include campus clean ups, state fair, and campus move in.

The Manteca, Calif. native placed third in the pole vault at the 2024 Big West Track and Field Championships. She completed her athletic career as a two-time Big West champion in the event, school indoor and outdoor pole vault record holder, and conference record and championship meet record holder. Miller was also honored as Big West Field Athlete of the Year during the 2022 season.

The Big West has celebrated student-athletes for the Service and Leadership Award annually, since the 2017-18 academic year. The award winners are selected at the discretion of each member-institution with criteria encompassing service, leadership and academics.

Each member-institution may submit one honoree per academic year who participates in a Big West sponsored sport and who engages consistently in service and leadership activities that impact the campus, community or regional levels. The awardee makes the most of opportunities presented to them by taking on key roles and is innovative in seeking out meaningful service and leadership opportunities, while keeping their academic eligibility on their respective team.
