• The Cal State Bakersfield beach volleyball team concluded the season at the Big West Championship this past week, going 1-2 in Long Beach, Calif. against conference opponents.
• The team started the tournament with a tough battle against Hawai'i, pushing 3 out of the 5 pairs to 3 sets, but the Roadrunners ended up falling5-0.
• Bakersfield answered back with a clutch win against Sacramento State.
  • The `Runners were down 2-1 early in the match but finished the dual with a 3-2 victory over the Hornets.
  • A great win from Ava Palm and Olivia Silacci-Jensen taking the number #3 pair to 3 sets secured the `Runners a spot in the elimination games on Friday.
• On elimination day, the `Runners lost to UC Davis in an early finish as the match concluded as soon as the Aggies defeated Pairs 1, 2, and 3.

Historic Season

• The `Runners completed the season going 16-20 overall under first-year Head Coach Andy Fulenwider. The 2024 team is now tied for the most wins in program history set at 16 wins under previous head coach Cesar Benatti in 2023.
• The `Runner pairing of Ella Erteltova and Vivi Kaelin posted 28 victories this year, smashing CSUB's single-season wins record which was previously 18 set just last year.
  • Two other `Runners, Kaia Fanshier (27) and Ella Ensign (26) also would have reset the record, but they finished just behind their `Runner teammates.
• Fanshier and Ensign went 25-6 (.806) on the year, resetting CSUB's single-season win percentage record for a pair.
  • Erteltova and Kaelin finished the year with a 28-8 record, just behind their teammates with a .778 clip.
• Bakersfield also earned two Big West Pair of the Week honors this season, marking the first time in program history of earning multiple nods in the same year.

• The Cal State Bakersfield softball team earned its first walkoff victory of the season, but ultimately dropped its Big West series against CSUN 2-1.
• Logan-Ray Gaspar added another multi-hit game to her season, leading the team at 8 games now.
• A pair of `Runners kept their streaks alive:
  • Shaylene Fuimaono extended her hitting streak to nine games and her reached base streak to ten
  • Rylee Price extended her hitting streak to eight games
• The Roadrunners won in walk-off fashion for the first time since February 17, 2023 versus Montana.

CSUB 3, CSUN 6 – Friday, April 26

• CSUN quickly got the game started bringing in two runners in the first inning, one coming from an RBI triple that narrowly landed in fair territory down the right field line.
• Senior right fielder Maya Williams went yard making the score 2-1 with her second home run of the season.
• The Matadors plated three runners in the second inning on a pair of doubles to go ahead 5-1.
• Bakersfield was held quiet until the sixth inning, scoring one run off an error.
• Rylee Price cut the Matador lead to two runs following an RBI single through the left side, plating Williams.
  • Price’s single extended her hitting streak to six games.
• Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Kaia Johnson tallied an RBI single, but the `Runner rally ended there.

CSUB 4, CSUN 3 – Saturday, April 27 (Game 1)

• Logan-Ray Gaspar started the `Runners off with a two-run home run to left field in the second inning.
• After Carter Thornton retired six Matadors in a row, CSUN got on the board in the third inning, scoring on a passed ball.
• In the bottom half of the third inning, Hailey Brooks added onto the CSUB lead with a no doubt solo shot to center field, making it 3-1.
• Thornton held CSUN in check until the fifth inning when they began to make some noise, driving in two runs and tying the score.
• Bakersfield began to generate some offense in the sixth inning, tallying three hits, but could not cash in.
• Thornton remained in the ball game, holding the Matadors scoreless in the top of the seventh.
• In the bottom of the seventh, Maya Williams and Rylee Price both got on base with a pair of singles.
  • Gaspar came up to the dish with two on, two outs, and with a full count, driving a ball into right field plating Williams to walk-off the Matadors.
  • Gaspar went three-for-three with three RBI in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

CSUB 3, CSUN 13 – Saturday, April 27 (Game 2)

• CSUN started Game 2 hot and in a hurry, tallying five runs on five hits and an error.
• Shaylene Fuimaono got the `Runners on the board in the bottom of the second, doubling into the gap scoring Jay Reeves.
  • In the next at-bat Maya Molina-Villarreal homered to left field cutting the CSUN lead in half to 6-3.
• Northridge responded with a home run of their own in the next inning, scoring three and extending their lead 9-3.
• The Matadors kept the CSUB bats silent the rest of the way as Bakersfield only had two base runners reach for the remainder of the game.

• The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team faced against the CSUN Madators but dropped the series. Bakersfield fought hard all weekend, keeping each game close, but were unable to pull out a win.
• Gary Grosjean threw the first complete game of the season for the `Runners this weekend, striking out 11 of CSUN batters over eight innings of work. 
• Kobe Silva batted .444 for the weekend leading the `Runners offensively. The redshirt junior put up two runs on the board, tallying four hits off nine at bats. 
• Nick Salas and Cody Hendriks also supported the team offensively, both bating .333, with Salas scoring two runs for Bakersfield.

 CSUB 3, CSUN 5– Friday, April 26

• The Roadrunners came out swinging in the first game of the series, something that has become very typical for the Bakersfield ball club.
• Scoring two runs right out of the gate, Bakersfield took the early lead. 
  • Cody Hendriks doubled down the left field line scoring in Nick Salas and Kobe Silva scored on the play thanks to an error.
• CSUB led CSUN 2-1 heading into the fifth inning when the Matadors started to get rolling.
  • CSUN scored one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh to take a 5-2 advantage.
• Bakersfield attempted a comeback in the top of the eighth inning, scoring a run, but that ended the `Runners' scoring for the night.

CSUB 4, CSUN 5– Saturday, April 27

• In the second game of the series Bakersfield was again looking for the win, but CSUN got out first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second.
• Bakersfield answered back in the top of the fifth, tying up the score at three runs apiece.
  • Elijah Pelayo (sac fly), Nick Salas (triple), and Kyler Stancato (single) all recorded RBI in the frame.
• The scoring continued to go back and forth throughout the night as CSUN took the lead once again in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 lead.
• In the top of the ninth Bakersfield worked hard to put up another run, but in the bottom of the Matadors earned a walk off hit to win the second game of the series. 

CSUB 0, CSUN 3– Sunday, April 28

• In the final game of the series, Bakersfield was held off for a full nine innings, unable to score any runs which had only happen three times previously this season and only one other time in conference.
• Kellen O’Connor and the Bakersfield defense held the Matadors from scoring for the first three innings but gave up two runs in the bottom of the fourth. 
• Scoring their final run in the bottom of the bottom of the eighth, the Matadors swept the series with a 3-0 victory on Sunday.

• Helena Valentic captured first place in the women’s 5,000m at the Fresno State Invitational, crushing her previous personal best by 40 seconds.
• Javier Toro and Neyda Martinez both move up on the CSUB all-time list in their respective events.

CSUB at Fresno State Invite

• On Friday, the `Runner throwers competed in the hammer throw.
• In a deep field where six total athletes threw over 200 feet, Matthew Garrett and Javier Toro placed 5th and 6th. Toro threw a personal best mark of 203’ 7”. He now holds the #5 spot in CSUB history in the event. 
• The two throwers came back on Saturday and placed 2nd and 3rd overall in the men’s shot put. Toro was the first collegiate finisher in the event with a mark of 54’ 7.25”. 
• Skyblue Gonzales ran a season best in the men’s 400-meter when he crossed the finish line with a time of 49.78.
• Neyda Martinez set another personal record in the women’s 800m. Martinez finished the race with a 2:18.29 and the junior now holds the #17 spot on the CSUB all-time list. 
• In the men’s 1,500m invitational heat, Jacob Yagers snagged his second fastest time ever despite the race going out in a fast first lap. The Bakersfield native finished sixth overall with a time of 3:50.88. 
• From the start of the gun in the women’s 5,000m, Helena Valentic controlled the race the whole time. She finished 28 seconds ahead of the second finisher in the race. Valentic’s solo performance earned herself a lifetime best of 17:40.49 and the senior is now #7 all-time in program history.
