CSUB Wrestling Mourns Passing of `Runner Legend Perry Shea

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling program has a collectively heavy heart after learning of the recent passing of Roadrunner alumnus Perry Shea. A two-time NCAA Champion who earned four All-American honors in the CSUB Blue & Gold, Shea left a notable impact on Cal State Bakersfield Wrestling.

A junior college recruit brought to Bakersfield by CSUB Head Coach Joe Seay, Shea was previously a standout athlete at Bellflower High School in Southern California. He went on to win a California State Junior College title at Cerritos College before moving to Kern County to be a `Runner.

In 1981, Shea won the NCAA Division II national title before placing third at the Division I National Championships. The 158-pounder became a back-to-back D2 Champion in 1982 while also finishing runner-up at the D1 tournament.

In just two years in Bakersfield, Shea posted an impressive 74-14-1 record. Over 40 years after his career concluded, Shea still ranks 45th all-time in CSUB history for career wins, 15th all-time with a career win percentage of .837, and 29th all-time with 16 career falls.

The CSUB Wrestling community extends its condolences to the Shea Family for their loss.
