`Runners Continue to Post Strong APR Scores

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The NCAA released its full report on Academic Progress Rate (APR) this week while Division I student-athletes shined in the classroom once again. The Roadrunner student-athletes of the CSU Bakersfield Athletics Department enjoyed great academic success as well, posting another strong showing with the APR reports indicating improvement and continued academic success.

The findings announced on Tuesday revealed the hard work of CSUB's student-athletes, coaches, and academic support staff through the end of the 2021-22 academic year. Five `Runner teams ranked among the nation's elite by posting perfect APR scores of 1,000 for the year: Beach Volleyball, Women's Basketball, Women's Cross Country, Women's Track & Field, and Men's Swimming & Diving.

Seven CSUB teams increased or maintained their single-year rates from last season: Men's Soccer, Men's Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Women's Basketball, Women's Cross Country, Beach Volleyball, and Women's Track & Field.

Posting perfect single-year scores leads to increased Multiyear Rates, a category in which the `Runners also excelled. CSUB learned on Tuesday that all 15 of its teams recorded four-year APR scores of 950 or higher for the second-straight season. Five of Bakersfield's programs were at 989 or above on the 2023 Multiyear Rates report. The Women's Basketball and Beach Volleyball teams have maintained perfect 1,000 multiyear rates for two years running.

"We are proud of the academic performance of CSUB student-athletes," said CSUB Director of Athletics Kyle Conder. "With nine sports earning an APR score of 975 or better, our programs are delivering on the CSUB Athletics pillar of Academic Excellence. A special congratulations to our Women's Basketball and Beach Volleyball programs for earning perfect 1,000 APR scores."

Every Division I sports team across the nation calculates its APR each academic year, like a report card. Scholarship student-athletes earn one point each semester for maintaining academic eligibility and one point for staying in school or graduating.

While CSUB has enjoyed marked improvement in APR scores, the `Runners still strive for advancement. Bakersfield's current goal moving forward is to have a departmental single-year APR score of 985 or above. Specifically, reaching the departmental single-year APR score of 985 will qualify the CSUB Athletics Department for a special NCAA Academic Revenue distribution that will further enhance academic excellence for its scholar-athletes. CSUB registered a department-wide single-year score of 971, showing room for growth toward its goal.

The staff of CSUB's Kegley Center for Student Success once again worked hand-in-hand with the `Runner coaching staffs to aid student-athletes in their academic endeavors. The Athletics coaches, academic advisors, and tutors all work toward the goal of seeing CSUB's student-athletes cross the commencement stage and earn degrees.

"I also want to thank our terrific faculty, dedicated staff in the Kegley Center for Student Success, and university leadership President Lynnette Zelezny, Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Wallace, and Faculty Athletics Representative Kyle Susa," Condor added. "We have a strong culture for Academic Excellence at CSUB because of their commitment to our student-athletes."

Nationwide, Division I student-athletes continue to achieve classroom success at record-high levels, earning an overall multiyear Academic Progress Rate of 984. Since the Division I membership created the Academic Performance Program 19 years ago, more than 20,700 former student-athletes have earned APR points for their prior teams by returning to college and earning a degree after their eligibility expired.

Information from an NCAA press release was used in this report.
