`Runners Split Pair of Home Matches

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield beach volleyball team split a pair of home matches on Saturday at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center. After kicking off the day with a 5-0 sweep of Pacific, the Roadrunners (14-7) dropped a 4-1 decision against Cal Poly (11-19), which got revenge against CSUB's 3-2 victory over the Mustangs in San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Mar. 26.

  • On the differences between Saturday's match against the Mustangs and Bakersfield's previous victory over Cal Poly: "They came in really aggressive, especially serving. Their serves were really effective today. They did a really good job of taking us out of system and putting us in a very uncomfortable situation. We either didn't adapt at all, or we took too long to adapt…The game that we played at Cal Poly, we were doing to them what they did today."
  • On the win from CSUB's No. 5 pair Pearl Moore and Megan Gilbert: "They are a really good ball control team. They are getting so much better in having a calm mindset to hold when the other team puts pressure on us."
Notables
  • Senior Hana Makonova picked up a win against Pacific and now has 43 in the sand as a `Runner. That mark ties her for the CSUB all-time record of 43 career wins, held by Sydney Haynes.
  • Fellow senior Hayley McCluskey also continues to climb Bakersfield's all-time wins list. She currently ranks fourth with 37 career victories after defeating Pacific on Saturday.
  • Moore and Gilbert officially went 2-0 on the day thanks to the win against Cal Poly, which received votes in the AVCA Top 20 poll a few weeks ago, and the Pacific forfeit. The duo improved to 13-7 on the year.
  • Bakersfield's No. 2, 3, and 4 pairs are all 15-6 this year. Each of the six `Runners in that group is hunting CSUB's all-time single-season wins record of 17, set by Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat in 2022.
