Hot-Hitting Mustangs Ride Past `Runners

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Despite a triple and a 2-for-3 day from right fielder Maya Williams, the Cal State Bakersfield softball team was unable to slow a mighty offensive effort from the Cal Poly Mustangs on Sunday. The Roadrunners dropped the Big West series finale, 7-0, as the Mustangs earned the series sweep on their home field.

Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "I thought we hit and pitched well enough all weekend, but we just weren't sharp defensively. The effort was there, but the execution was wanting."
  • "We hit several balls hard today, but Cal Poly did a better job navigating the wind and had a well-executed offensive plan of their own."
  • "We continue to compete at a high level and that has grown our culture and allowed us to improve. The tangible results will follow."
CSUB 0, Cal Poly 7
  • Cal Poly jumped out to an early lead, capitalizing on some `Runner miscues in the bottom of the first inning to plate a pair of runs.
  • Brianna Sanchez quieted the Mustangs' bats for the next three innings, but Cal Poly broke through once again in the fifth. The Mustangs scored four more runs to take a 6-0 lead through five complete.
  • The Mustangs tacked on another run in the sixth on a sac fly, going ahead by the final score of 7-0.
  • CSUB pitcher Kaycie Kennedy limited Cal Poly to just one run over the final two innings. Throwing in relief, Kennedy got the `Runners out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
  • Cal Poly Head Coach Jenny Condon became the Mustangs' all-time winningest coach on Sunday, earning her 444th career victory.
