Makonova Stands Alone as `Runners Go 2-0

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Sending off its five seniors in style, the Cal State Bakersfield beach volleyball earned a pair of 4-1 victories over CSUN and Westcliff on Friday at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center. The Roadrunners completed a 3-0 regular-season sweep against Big West foe CSUN (16-15) on Senior Day before defeating Westcliff (18-5), the No. 1 ranked team in the NAIA.
 
Notables
  • Senior Hana Makonova picked up a win against CSUN and is now Bakersfield's all-time leader in career wins. The veteran `Runner has 44 career victories, breaking a tie on Friday with CSUB great Sydney Haynes.
  • Fellow senior Hayley McCluskey also continues to climb Bakersfield's all-time wins list. With two more wins on Friday, McCluskey currently ranks fourth with 39 career victories, but sits just two wins behind both Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat.
  • Friday's matches featured eight different sets that went beyond the regulation 21 points. Bakersfield was 8-0 in those sets, including a thrilling, gritty victory from CSUB's 1s, Makonova and Sophia Brandstetter. The `Runners outlasted their Westcliff counterparts in a nearly-unthinkable final score of 34-32 in Set 2.
  • CSUB's 3, 4, and 5 pairings all went 2-0 on the day. The 3s, Isabella Almeida and McCluskey, and the 4s, Emma Bubelis and Alanna Shields, both have 17-6 records on the year, tying the program's single-season wins record (17, Solberg and Vukobrat, 2022).
