CSUB Makes Progress Against Defending Big West Champ

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield softball team made progress in each game of its Big West series against Cal State Fullerton, the defending league Champion, but the Titans proved to be too much for Bakersfield. Sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, Fullerton wrapped up the series strong while CSUB enjoyed improvement throughout each contest.

Quotes from Head Coach Dan Sperl
  • "We did a lot of things right today, but not enough. Fullerton is a great team and they have a top-20 RPI for a reason. They played hard and maximized all their chances."
  • "We had our opportunities, but couldn't get the key hit at the key time. A lot of hard-hit balls right at defenders, and they made some nice plays."
  • "We have to get back to work this week and prepare for another good team in UC Davis."
CSUB 0, CSUF 8 (5 inn.)
  • The Titans scored one run on an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, but CSUB starting pitcher Reina Castillo limited the damage.
  • In the bottom of the third, a solo home run from Jessi Alcala doubled Fullerton's lead, 2-0.
  • One frame later, Alcala sent her second homer of the game over the wall, plating three Titans for a 5-0 advantage after four complete innings.
  • Leading off the top of the fifth with singles from Savanna Montoya and Samantha Martinez, the `Runners earned their best scoring opportunity of the game. The Titans tagged Montoya out at home on a squeeze play and ultimately kept their five-run advantage intact.
  • Fullerton plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, walking off with an 8-0 victory.
  • Bakersfield got hits from Montoya, Martinez, and Shaylene Fuimaono in Game 1 of the doubleheader as well as a walk from Maya Williams.
CSUB 2, CSUF 10 (5 inn.)
  • The `Runners scored their first runs and took their first lead of the series in the top of the second. Bakersfield native Jordan Head's first hit of the season, a double down the line, plated Montoya before Maya Molina-Villareal was able to scurry home thanks to a Titan fielding error.
  • Cal State Fullerton answered back with one run in the second and third innings, tying the score at 2-2.
  • The Titans scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth, including four unearned runs, taking a 7-2 advantage.
  • Plating three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Fullerton walked off with the series sweep.
  • Montoya, a senior outfielder, went 2-for-4 on the day for the `Runners.
