Rich Bows Out of NCAA Wrestling Championships

TULSA, Okla. – Chance Rich's run at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships came to an end on Friday morning with a loss to another highly-ranked foe. Rich dropped a battle against Michigan's #11 Dylan Ragusin and bowed out of the national tournament with a 1-2 record.

Notables
  • Rich and Ragusin went to the second period tied 0-0 after an action-filled first frame that ended up with no points scored.
  • Ragusin got a quick point from a fast escape, then took a 3-0 lead on a scramble that Bakersfield challenged for a takedown for Rich, but the review call went Michigan's way.
  • After Ragusin picked up four back points, Rich knew he had to go for broke, trailing 7-0 heading into the final period.
  • Rich's final attempts to score were countered and Ragusin advanced with a 10-0 major decision in a hard-fought bout.
Quotes from Head Coach Luke Smith
  • "I'm proud of how Chance went out and competed today. I don't think the scores of those last two matches are a good representation of how competitive the matches were."
  • "Chance was battling some injuries the last half of the season, but he still went out and competed with heart this weekend."
  • "We have a lot of work to do and need to embrace the challenge that lies ahead. We have a good redshirt group that will be looking to break into the lineup."
  • "Coach Bleise and I will be looking to add guys that fit the Bakersfield Grit mentality we are looking for and give us some much-needed depth."
That's a Wrap
  • The 2022-23 Cal State Bakersfield wrestling season has come to an end.
  • Coach Smith and the `Runners will start preparing for the 2023-24 season with goals of continuing the program's streak of 51-consecutive seasons with at least one `Runner qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
