CSUB Alum Andy Fulenwider Named Head Beach Volleyball Coach

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield Director of Athletics Kyle Conder has announced Andy Fulenwider as the fourth Head Coach in the history of the Roadrunner beach volleyball program. An alumnus of the university, Fulenwider will bring a wealth of experience in the sand, at the club, collegiate, and professional levels, back to Bakersfield.

"We are excited to welcome Andy back to Bakersfield," Conder said of his newest hire. "As an alumnus, Andy has a special enthusiasm for CSUB and CSUB Athletics. His vision for CSUB Beach Volleyball aligns with the pillars of CSUB Athletics: Academic Excellence, Outstanding Student-Athlete Experience, Competitive Success, and Community Engagement. Andy's passion for CSUB Beach Volleyball will make our program better in The Big West as we pursue championships and graduate leaders."

Fulenwider has immersed himself in the beach volleyball world and has worked tirelessly to develop himself and others in the sport. Over the last five years, he has made a big impact while coaching all levels of the game simultaneously.

On the professional level, Fulenwider has been a coach and private trainer for AVP players since 2018. He has worked alongside some of the best players in the country and some of the top-ranked players in the world. In 2019 he began assisting at University of Saint Katherine alongside Head Coach Lauren Deturk and First Assistant Matt McDevitt, who led the Firebirds to a Conference title in 2021. He continued to work with the Firebirds in various capacities in the years to follow and in 2023 they earned a Top 10 NAIA National Ranking.

"I feel extremely honored and privileged to be able to share my knowledge and love for the game with our team here at CSUB," Fulenwider said. "It's humbling to be able to give back to the community that has given so much to me over the years. I am looking forward to the support our great community will show our student-athletes as we continue to build an extremely competitive program."

Fulenwider also has strong roots in California with the beach volleyball club scene. He was a Head Coach with Tamarack BVC for five years before recently taking a position at Wave BVC, one of the top clubs in the country. His connections set him up with the top recruiters who can continue to bring talented student-athletes to Kern County.

A 1999 graduate of Cal State Bakersfield, Fulenwider went on to earn a teaching credential from Point Loma Nazarene University before embarking on a career in coaching.

Fulenwider has hit the ground running at CSUB and will help guide a rapidly-growing program toward its ultimate goal of winning a Big West title.
