Bakersfield Lands SIU Transfer Nicole Horton

Bakersfield, Calif. – Freestyle specialist Nicole Horton has signed a National Letter of Intent to transfer to CSU Bakersfield for the 2022-23 swimming and diving season. Horton competed as a prep at Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., before swimming for two seasons at Southern Illinois University, where she earned All-Missouri Valley Conference Honorable Mention and All-Academic honors with the Salukis.
 
"Nicole should make an immediate impact in the Freestyle and on all of our team relays," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "As a transfer student, she will bring experience and leadership to a very young team. We're excited for her to join the 'Runner family."
 
Horton made four trips to the Arizona State Championship meet as a prep, qualifying in 14 individual events and placing in the Top-10 on six occasions. She finished sixth in the state in the 200 Individual Medley as a sophomore and led the Huskies to a fourth-place medley relay finish as a junior.
 
At SIU, Horton competed in five different Freestyle events, the 200 Butterfly and several relays.
 
She earned All-League Honorable Mention in 2020-21, swimming to an 8th-place finish in the 200 Freestyle (1:54.59) at the MVC Championships. On the season, Horton turned in nine Top-5 finishes, including a win in the 500 Freestyle in a tri-meet with Valparaiso and Eastern Illinois.
 
As a sophomore, she placed among the Top-8 on 16 separate occasions and reset personal bests in the 100 Freestyle (51.91), the 200 Freestyle (1:52.46) and the 500 Freestyle (5:06.14). Horton competed in the C-Finals at the conference championship, placing first in the 200 Freestyle and second in the 100 Freestyle.
 
The daughter of Dan and Nann Horton, Nicole was born on May 22, 2022. She was majoring in Physiology at SIU.
