CSUB Readies for Big West Beach Volleyball Championship

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Just a few days of practice remains between CSU Bakersfield and the 2022 Big West Beach Volleyball Championship. The Roadrunners will head to San Luis Obispo, Calif., Apr. 29-30, to battle the rest of the league with an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship on the line.

"I'm feeling really good heading into the Big West Championship," said Cesar Benatti, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "We had a really good last weekend. We played really close with Long Beach State, a team that is very good. We ended the season with a win, which is great in any circumstance. This week, we're going to keep working hard in practice so that we get to the tournament in a good position."

CSUB learned Tuesday afternoon that it had been selected as the fifth seed in the field of seven teams. The Big West Committee's choice sealed a first-round rematch from the 2021 Big West Championship as Bakersfield will once again open the double elimination tourney on Friday with a clash against fifth-seeded UC Davis.

Last postseason, the `Runners bested the Aggies in a narrow, 3-2 battle, advancing to the winner's bracket. Earlier this season at the Big West Challenge, CSUB and UC Davis went toe-to-toe, but the Aggies came out on top with 5-0 sweep of the `Runners.

Should Bakersfield avenge its March loss to UC Davis with a win on Friday morning, the `Runners would move into a second-round matchup with No. 1 seed Hawai'i, scheduled for the afternoon. A loss to the Aggies would send CSUB on the long road to the Championship in which the `Runners would need to win five-straight elimination games to claim the Big West crown.

CSUB and UC Davis will kick off the entire tournament at 9 a.m. (PT) on Friday at Cal Poly's Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. Live stats will be available throughout the tournament and Saturday's semifinal and championship action will be streamed live on ESPN+.
