CSUB Beach Volleyball Opens Season Against Vanguard

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team kicked off the 2022 season and the `Runner Invite at home on Friday with a 4-1 victory over Vanguard. The Roadrunners controlled four of five scored matches at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.

"I was happy with the performance," said Cesar Benatti, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "Four out of the six had a really good performance, controlling the game. Controlling the things we've been working on in practice, which is mostly passing and setting."

"Two of our pairs struggled a little bit," Benatti stated, "but totally expected for the beginning of the season, new pairing. So it's part of the process, but I think overall we're at a really good spot."

CSUB 4, Vanguard 1

The `Runners split in the opening wave of play. Bakersfield's No. 5 pair of Carole Benke and Megan Gilbert put together a dominant performance over Vanguard's Herder and Arnold, clinching the match with a quick victory, 21-8 and 21-10. Unke and Brooke Boiseau, playing as the No. 4 pair, also cruised to a win for CSUB, defeating Cambria Fernandez and Bailey Coffin, 21-9 and 21-13.

Tomorrow

The `Runners (1-0) will close out the Barnes Beach Complex `Runner Invite on Saturday by hosting a pair of matches against tough NCAA Division I opponents. CSUB will open the morning, once again at 10 a.m. (PT), with a match against Pacific. At noon, the `Runners will tackle Pepperdine in the final match of the two-day tournament.

"Expect really good games tomorrow,"added Benatti. "Both teams are really good, so its going to be a dog fight for sure. If we keep control and keep focusing on passing, setting, being in system - then I think we can make good games against them."
