`Runners to Fight for Big West Beach Volleyball Crown

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The week of the Big West Beach Volleyball Championship has arrived and the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners are ready to contend for the league title. Battling in one of the top conferences in the country, the `Runners earned the fifth seed for this weekend's double-elimination tournament, which will be held at Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach, Calif., Apr. 30-May 1.

"This is the weekend we have been working for all season long," said Cesar Benatti, CSUB's Head Coach. "As I always mention, the goal is to continue to get better throughout the week of practice and get there on Friday ready to go. The solution driven mindset, positivity and some key technical elements are our main focus on the preparation for the tournament. We plan to compete really hard and have fun during the games."

Benatti also addressed the challenging season the team has endured: "We've had some ups and downs during the season, which is completely normal, but overall we improved so much! That gives us a good feeling and strong confidence to play the main tournament of the season. We look forward to playing this weekend."

While playing six matches against teams ranked in the Top 20 in the AVCA Coaches poll, CSUB finished the 2021 regular season with a 4-8 record. The `Runners wound up the fifth seed in this week's tournament and will kick off the Championship against fourth-seeded UC Davis on Friday morning at 9 a.m.

The winner between CSUB and Davis will go on to face top-seeded Cal Poly in the double-elimination tournament. The full list of tournament seedings follows: 1. Cal Poly, 2. Long Beach State, 3. Hawai'i, 4. UC Davis, 5. CSU Bakersfield, 6. CSUN, 7. Sacramento State.
