Ducharme, Martinoni, Rich Advance at NCAA Championships

St. Louis, Mo. – CSU Bakersfield's Chance Rich, Angelo Martinoni and Dom Ducharme won afternoon matches at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo., advancing to day two of the National Tournament. All three Roadrunners dropped their opening round bouts, but kept their All-American dreams alive with bounce back efforts in wrestlebacks.

Seeded #19 at 133 lbs, Rich fell in overtime to South Dakota State's #14 Zach Price in the opening round. Rich just missed on a pair of attacks in the first period, as Price's long legs allowed him to escape trouble on each occasion. Rich scored a second-period takedown to grab a 2-1 lead, but the SDSU wrestler was able to escape and tie the match at two points apiece. After a scoreless final frame, Price struck quickly in overtime, taking down Rich for a 4-2 sudden victory.

Rich responded in spectacular fashion against Michigan State's #30 Jordan Hamdan in consolation round one. After a slow start for both wrestlers, the CSUB sophomore used a lightning quick move to get on top of Hamdan and drove him to the mat for the pin at 2:42.

Martinoni, the #27 seed at 141 lbs, fell behind early in his first round match-up with Missouri's Allan Hart. He appeared to earn a pair of second-period nearfall points, but a call for an illegal hold turned what could have been a one-point margin, into a 4-0 deficit. He managed a late reversal, but eventually fell 9-2 to the sixth-seeded Hart.

Martinoni would successfully come from behind in his second dual of the day, when he grabbed 8-4 victory over Appalachian State's #22 Anthony Brito. After surrendered a pair of first period takedowns, he rebounded to ride out the final four minutes of the match on top, scoring six nearfall points in the process.

The #21 seed, Ducharme dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision to Iowa's #12 Nelson Brands in round one. Two nearfall points gave Ducharme a 3-2 lead early in the second period, but Brands immediately responded with a reversal and two takedowns to carry an 8-5 lead into the third period. Ducharme would earn his third escape of the match in the final frame, but could get no closer than 8-6.

With his career in the balance, Ducharme made short work of Lehigh's #28 Dylan Ammerman in the consolation bracket. The CSUB senior took Ammerman to the ground just eight seconds into the match and never looked back, cruising to a 16-1 technical fall victory. Ducharme recorded four takedowns and six nearfall points in the contest.

All three `Runners are back in action Saturday morning.

Rich will face #20 Ryan Sullivan of West Virginia, while Ducharme wrestles Oklahoma State's #11 Dakota Geer. Martinoni will face a stiff test in Oklahoma's #5 Dom Demas, who was upset in the 141 lb bracket to start round two.
