Urias First at 174 to Lead Eight Top-Four Finishers at CSUB's Roadrunner Open

Bakersfield, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore Albert Urias won the 174-pound championship, and seven other CSU Bakersfield wrestlers posted top-four finishes at the annual Roadrunner Open, hosted Sunday at the Icardo Center in front of an announced crowd of 521.
 
"First and foremost, it was great to host the Roadrunner Open again in front of our hometown fans," said CSUB Head Coach Luke Smith. "The crowd gave us a lot of energy today and that helped our guys compete as well as they have all season."
 
Urias finished off a perfect afternoon with a dominant 8-2 decision over John Morrison of Beaver Dam RTC in the championship bout.
 
"Albert showed a lot of character and resilience today," said Smith. "He didn't start the way he wanted to this season, but he responded today and showed what he is capable of giving us moving forward."
 
Eddie Flores (125), Angelo Martinoni (141) and Josh Brown (149) all posted second-place finishes in their respective weight-classes.
 
Brock Rogers (157), Augustine Garcia (165) and Jacob Hansen (184) all placed third, while unattached freshman Cade Lucio (149) garnered a fourth-place finish.

NOTABLE…
* The Roadrunners wrestled at the Icardo Center for the first time since a Senior Night win over California Baptist on Feb. 21, 2020.
* Tonight's tournament win was the second of Urias' Bakersfield career. His first tournament title came in 2019, following a perfect 4-0 run at the Menlo Open.  
* Urias beat Utah Valley's Kekana Fouret in the semi-finals, avenging a 4-3 loss in Friday's dual meet with the Wolverines.
* Martinoni fell for the first time this season when he dropped the 141-pound championship bout to Isaiah Delgado (UVU-Unattached), 8-5.
* Brown improved to 8-2 in tournament competition this season.
* Garcia finished the day 5-1, losing only to eventual 165-pound champion Daniel Sneditker (Brunson UVRTC) in the second round.
* Hanson posted two major decision victories and a pin as part of his 4-1 effort.

"The Cliff Keen Invitational is the toughest tournament outside of the NCAA Championships," Smith explained. "It's always a challenging test and we'll see a lot of the national contenders in Las Vegas. We'll take the next two weeks to evaluate our performances, recover and figure out where we can be better."
