Bakersfield Drops Season Opener at #4 Michigan

#21 Angelo Martinoni (141) Opens Season with Fourth-Straight Dual Meet Victory

Ann Arbor, Mich. – #14 Angelo Martinoni won his season debut at 141-pounds, but CSU Bakersfield had a tough time with #4 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Sunday afternoon, falling to the Wolverines, 39-3, in their season opening dual meet.
 
Martinoni built and 8-0 lead in the first period against Michigan's Patrick Nolan, using an early takedown and six nearfall points to set the tone for the bout.
 
Eddie Flores (125), Augustine Garcia (165) and Jake Andrews (285) all wrestled well for the `Runners.
 
Flores fell in an up-tempo, back-and-forth match-up with #23 Jack Medley, 15-9. The highlight of the meet was a 6-6 second period, that saw the two 125-pounders trading shots again and again.
 
Garcia hung tough against #11 Carmeron Amine, a returning All-American for the Maize and Blue, losing just 5-2.
 
Andrews used a third period escape to force overtime against Blake Querio, but fell during the sudden victory period, 5-3.
 
NOTABLE…
* Martinoni won his fourth-consecutive dual meet match-up, dating back to Feb. 8, 2020.
* Garcia has two losses on the season, both narrow defeats to some of the top wrestlers in his weight class. He lost last week against #1 Shane Griffith at the Menlo Open and tonight against #11 Amine.
* The Wolverines and Roadrunners met in dual competition for the first time in history.
