Bakersfield Drops Pair to Open 2021 Season

Bakersfield, Calif. - Dominic Ducharme, Angelo Martinoni and Jacob Sieder all won twice, but CSU Bakersfield stumbled in its season opener dropping Pac-12 Duals to Stanford, 29-13, and Little Rock, 24-21, on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners, who returned to practice just two weeks ago, flashed of brilliance throughout the line-up, but ultimately surrendered too many bonus points and lost both matches late. 

"Despite today's results, I'm grateful that our guys got the opportunity to compete today," said Interim Head Coach Luke Smith. "We had a number of good performances and some really nice wins. Angelo avenged a Pac-12 Tournament loss and Chance beat a nationally ranked opponent. Dom looked great bouncing back from injury and I know he'll only get better." 

Martinoni, Ducharme and Sieder all won against Stanford. 

Martinoni raced to an 8-0 lead after one over Stanford's Luciano Arroyo, turning an early takedown into six more near-fall points. He tacked on another takedown in the third period and added an escape and the ride-time point in a 12-0 major decision win at 141 pounds. 

Sieder was even more dominant, needing just 2:46 seconds to stick Seamus O'Malley in the heavyweight bout for the tenth pin of his career. Sieder would add a technical victory over Peter Ming in extra matches, needing just 3:56 to rout his second Cardinal opponent of the afternoon. He posted two takedowns and 12 near-fall points, winning 16-0. 

Making his first appearance in nearly a full calendar year, Ducharme posted a methodical 4-0 win over Jared Hill in the battle at 184 pounds. Ducharme took Hill to the mat in the first round, and added a second-round escape and the ride-time point to secure his victory. 

The `Runners trailed just 17-9 when the line-up turned over to the 125 pound match-up between Eddie Flores and Stanford's Jackson DiSario. Flores scored an early takedown and raced out to a 6-0 lead, before nearly pinning DiSario late in the first round. The 2020 NCAA Qualifier escaped and batted back for an 8-7 overtime decision that put Stanford in control.

Martinoni and Ducharme won again versus Little Rock. 

At 141 pounds, Martinoni bested Connor Ward in a grueling match-up that saw just one scoring sequence over three rounds. On the bottom to start the second frame, Martinoni quickly reversed Ward and racked up ride-time to take a 3-0 decision. 

Ducharme took down Little Rock's Tanner Mendoza early in his bout at 184 pounds, and eventually pinned his Trojan opponent in 2:04. It was the 17th stick in Ducharme's Bakersfield career, moving him into 25th on CSUB's all-time list. 

Chance Rich, Albert Urias and Brock Rogers also posted wins for CSUB in the dual. 

Rich jumped out to an early lead and hung on for a 7-5 win over Paul Bianchi, a 2018 NCAA Qualifier, at 133 pounds, while Urias used a late takedown to sneak past Little Rock's Triston Wills. Rogers led 3-0 when he slammed Thomas Lisher to the mat, knocking him out of the dual and creating an injury default. 

Bakersfield and Little Rock split the dual's five matches, but the Trojans picked up in four of their five wins to take victory and drop the `Runners to 0-2. 

Redshirt Freshman Adrian Chavez wrestled twice at 197 pounds, two classes above his normal weight, filling in for reigning Pac-12 Champ Josh Loomer. 

"Its only the beginning of our season," Smith explained. "Our results tonight won't define us; how we respond to them will. As a group, we will be better." 

CSUB will have two weeks to shake off additional rust, before returning to action on February 7 at Oregon State.
