`Runners Best Oregon State in Dramatic Fashion

Gerl and Urias Post Pins, While Rohlfing and Loomer Earn Major Decisions

Bakersfield, Calif. – After falling behind early, CSU Bakersfield rattled off 23-straight points to take control of a dual meet with visiting Oregon State, Friday night at the Icardo Center. The Roadrunners posted a pair of pins and two wins by major decision to race past the Beavers in a match full of dramatic moments. Josh Loomer clinched the win for CSUB when he dominated #33 Colt Doyle at 184, giving the `Runners a seven-point lead with two bouts remaining. The `Runners would eventually claim a win in their Pac-12 conference opener by a 26-16 margin.

"I'm proud of the guys and how they wrestled today," said CSUB Head Coach Manny Rivera. "We're starting to loosen up and wrestle with enthusiasm and our compete level has been high; That combination in approach is leading to some great results, for both the team and for individuals."

Bakersfield dropped the first three matches of the dual and trailed 10-0 heading into Rohlfing's match at 149.

But the CSUB senior halted the Beaver's momentum in its tracks with a dominating 13-5 major decision victory. Rohlfing fell behind on an early takedown, but immediately escaped and added a takedown of his own to lead 3-2 after the first period. He cruised from that point on, posting four more takedowns of OSU's Lane Stigall. On multiple occasions Rohlfing allowed Stigall to his feet, before dropping him again in a successful attempt to grab the major decision point for the `Runners.

The win was Rohlfing's fifth in a row and the 80th of his career, which places him in a tie for 32nd all-time on the individual wins list at CSUB. He is tied with Andy Varner, who wrestled for the Roadrunners from 1996-2000.

Wyatt Gerl collected his third straight dual victory against Oregon State's Logan Meek at 157. Gerl handled his opponent from the start, netting a takedown and four nearfall points to give himself a commanding 6-0 leader after one. Meek cut the lead to 6-2 with a reversal in the second period, but Gerl responded with one of his own, early in the third, when he flipped Meeks with a summersault and then, in an instant, stuck him to the mat for the pin.

Gerl managed just a single pin during his junior season at CSUB, but already has five wins by fall this season in just 19 bouts.

The theatrics were just beginning.

Jacob Thalin followed Gerl and added a 7-5 decision over the Beavers Aaron Olmos. Thalin escaped late in the third to tie the score at five a piece, seemingly setting the stage for overtime. Instead, Thalin charged at Olmos with less than three seconds left on the clock and eventually took him to the mat as time expired.

"We talk to our guys all the time about doing the little things," said Rivera. "We don't know which moment might decide a match so we want to execute all of them. We did that tonight. Wyatt's extra effort to pin his man and Jacob wrestling to the whistle were great examples of why execution is so important."

Albert Urias collected a pin of his own at 174. He led Jackson McKinney 6-4 when he stuck him at 6:14 to pick up his second career, and second-consecutive, dual meet victory.

At 184 Josh Loomer wrestled his best bout of the season, breezing past #33 Colt Doyle of Oregon State. Doyle entered the meet with a 14-7 overall mark, but Loomer made quick work of the Beaver jumping out to a 6-1 lead after the first period of action. Loomer scored the last five points of the match, after Doyle had clawed back to within three, to earn a major decision and clinch the team win for the `Runners.

"I thought Josh was excellent tonight," said Rivera. "He's always had a lot of talent, but his wrestling is starting to mature, and he dominated a ranked kid tonight. Hopefully, this can be the start of a nice run for him."

Jarrod Snyder picked up his fourth win in his last five bouts to cement the final margin of victory in CSUB's 26-16 win. Snyder jumped out to a 7-0 lead before OSU's Jamarcus Grant responded with a furious third period. Grant scored six points in the final frame, but Snyder held on using a pair of escapes to clinch his 9-6 victory.

The `Runners are back in action almost immediately as they head to Palo Alto tomorrow afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. dual with the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford is currently ranked #14 in the country by the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll. The Cardinal are 8-2 overall and 1-1 in Pac-12 action, but fell in their most recent outing at #5 Arizona State.

Bakersfield knocked off the 22nd-ranked Stanford at the Icardo Center in 2019, when Snyder's overtime takedown clinched a 20-10 Roadrunner win.
