Wrestling to Host 2nd-Annual Feud on the Field

CSUB Continues Pac-12 Competition at Cal Poly, Friday, and against Arizona State, Sunday.

Bakersfield, Calif. – After splitting a pair of Pac-12 duals last weekend, the CSU Bakersfield wrestling team continues conference competition this week against Cal Poly and Arizona State. The Roadrunners will travel to San Luis Obispo to square off with the Mustangs on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m., before returning home to face the #4 Sun Devils in the 2nd-Annual Feud on the Field, Sunday at noon. CSUB enters the weekend with a 5-5 overall mark and a 1-1 record in the Pac-12.

"We've been wrestling well, and I like where we are as a team right now," said CSUB Head Coach Manny Rivera. "We have two more tough opponents this weekend and we need to continue to compete with enthusiasm and execution if we want to have success."

Cal Poly enters Friday night's dual with a 3-6 overall record and an 0-1 mark in conference wrestling. The Mustangs have lost six of their last seven, including duals at Northern Colorado and Air Force last weekend. They're led by Tom Lane at 197 and Bernie Truax at 165.

Lane is 15-3 this season and has yet to lose in the dual meet format. Lane has won six-straight bouts including a pair of tech falls wins and a major decision victory.

Truax has won five of his last six, with his only loss coming at the hands of Stanford's nationally ranked Shane Griffith. He's 13-9 overall and will face off with Bakersfield's Jacob Thalin in a key swing match Friday night.

At 149 Joshy Cortez is Russell Rohlfing's projected opponent. Cortez is 9-9 on the season but has often risen to the occasion against ranked competition.

Rohlfing meanwhile is 18-7 overall, has won six straight and continues to climb the all-time career wins ladder at CSUB. The redshirt senior currently sits alone in 32nd place with 81 victories as a Roadrunner. Rohlfing is also in search of a fourth-consecutive trip the NCAA Tournament.

Bakersfield leads the all-time series with Cal Poly by a 31-18-2 margin. CSUB knocked off the Mustangs 24-11 at the Icardo Center a season ago.

Following Friday night's dual, Arizona State comes to town for the 2nd-Annual Feud on the Field Sunday afternoon. The Sun Devils are 12-1 and rank #4 nationally this season. ASU swept road duals at Arkansas Little Rock and Missouri last weekend and boast six wrestlers who currently rank in the top-10 of their respective weight classes and seven ranked overall. On the otherside of the coin, seven `Runners have knocked off at least one ranked opponent this season.

The Sun Devils are led by the Valencia brothers. Anthony Valencia is the 9th ranked wrestler at 174 this season, with a record of 17-5, while Zahid Valencia is a perfect 20-0 on the year and the #1 overall wrestler in the 184 lb weight class.

Tanner Hall (#4), Josh Shields (#6), Brandon Courtney (#8), Kendall Norfleet (#9) and Jacori Teemer (#15) are also ranked nationally for ASU.

Arizona State holds an all-time series advantage of 27-11-1 against CSUB. The Sun Devils won last season's meeting in Tempe, Ariz., 24-12.

Rohlfing, Jarrod Snyder and Josh Loomer each opened their Pac-12 seasons by winning both of their bouts against Oregon State and Stanford.

Snyder has now won eight of his last ten bouts in total. He is 16-8 during the 2019-20 campaign and is now just three wins shy of matching his combined win total from his first two seasons in Bakersfield.

Loomer had dropped a number of close matches prior to, and after, the New Year. In fact, five of his 12 losses have come by just a single point. He turned that around in style, last weekend, when he notched a dominating major decision against #33 Colt Doyle of Oregon State. He followed up that win with a 7-5 decision over Stanford's Nick Addison.

Chance Rich, Angelo Martinoni and Wyatt Gerl will be critical to CSUB's team performance this weekend. The three face off against dangerous opponents in key swing matches across both duals.

Sunday's Feud on the Field will take place on the CSUB Main Soccer Field and the first 100 fans in attendance will receive free t-shirts.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased at 654-Blue or online at www.gorunners.com/tickets.

After this weekend, the `Runners will have just a single home meet remaining in regular-season action. Bakersfield will host California Baptist on Senior Night, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. The Pac-12 Championships will kick-off two weeks later at Stanford.
