Four Sign with CSUB Wrestling

Bakersfield, Calif. – Four student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent with CSU Bakersfield Wrestling during the early signing period, as part of Interim Head Coach Luke Smith's first recruiting class. Junior college transfer Jacob Hansen and high school signees Cade Lucio, Isaac Salas and Johnathon Viveros will join the Roadrunner program beginning in the fall of 2021. All four commitments are California natives.

"I'm excited about the talent and potential of our four early signees," said Smith. "This is a great start to the class. Adding these four to our current student-athletes gives us a great group, capable of taking our program to the next level. The future is bright for Roadrunner Wrestling!"

Hansen currently attends Moorpark College, where he posted a 32-1 record, en route to the 2019 State Champion at 165 pounds, and was named as the CCCAA's Outstanding Wrestler of the Year. He competed for Royal High School in Simi Valley, Calif., as a prep, for head coach Richard Carillo. As a senior, Hansen won the CIF SS Northern Division Championship at 145 pounds and placed 8th in the CIF State Tournament. He was also a three-time Coastal Canyon League Champion and qualified for three CIF Championship Tournaments in his career at Royal. He finished his high school career with 161 wins against just 43 losses.

"Despite all of the success he has had, Jacob still has so much untapped potential," Smith said. "He's going to make big strides when we get him on campus and into the room."

Lucio is a Bakersfield native and currently competes for Bakersfield High School and head coach Andy Varner. As a junior, he posted a 16-8 record with three pins, two major decisions and five tech fall victories, and advanced to the CIF State Tournament in the 138-pound weight class. Lucio was also the 2019 Runner-Up at the US Junior National Greco Roman Wrestling Championships in Fargo, N.D.

"Cade is a tough and hard-nosed wrestler, who has already had national success at the high school level," Smith explained. "We've had great success with local products at CSUB and we expect that will continue with Cade."

Salas hails from La Mirada, Calif., and attends St. John Bosco, wrestling for coaches Jeff Anderson and Ruben Valencia. He finished his junior season with a 19-3 overall record and captured the Trinity League Championship in the in the 138-pound weight class. Salas advanced to the CIF State Tournament and eventually finished second at 138 pounds. In 2019, he finished his high school season with a 12-4 mark. Salas is ranked as the #66 recruit in the country, across all weight classes, by Open Mat.

"Isaac is a program changing recruit," Smith claimed. "He is one of the top-ranked athletes in the nation for his weight class and his power and positioning make him very hard to beat."

A native of Kingsburg, Calif., Viveros competes for Kingsburg High School and coach Bryce Hammond. He placed seventh in the 138-pound weight class at the 2020 CIF State Tournament after posting a 5-2 record in the meet. In 2018, Viveros captured a first-place finish at the CSL Finals and placed second in the CIF Division II Valley Championship meet.

"Johnathon is a fierce competitor, who is able to break his opponents with his tenacious pace," Smith explained. "We're really excited to see what he can do at the college level."

The Roadrunners finished the 2020 season with a dual meet record of 7-6, before placing third at the Pac-12 Championship meet. A pair of Bakersfield grapplers, Russell Rohlfing and Josh Loomer, posted conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
