Slow Starts Doom `Runners at Wyoming



Bakersfield, Calif. – Slow starts put multiple CSU Bakersfield wrestlers into deficits they could not overcome, as the Roadrunners fell, 34-3, at Wyoming on Saturday night. The Cowboys won the first eight bouts of the dual, including one by fall and four by major decision to put CSUB away early. Senior Russell Rohlfing picked up Bakersfield's lone win as the `Runners fell to 2-4 in dual meets on the season.
 
"Wyoming is a great team who wrestles well at home and they certainly did tonight," said Head Coach Manny Rivera. "We didn't match their level of readiness and we struggled to put together complete matches."
 
Cole Moody gave the Cowboys a quick 3-0 lead when he dispatched Jacob Thalin, 4-2, in the opening match at 165 lbs. Thalin grabbed an early lead with a first-period takedown, but Moody reversed him sending the match to the second period all square. Moody chose bottom and immediately escaped, giving him a 3-2 lead and all the points he would need for victory. He added the ride-time point to round out the final margin.
 
Hayden Hastings, the #10 ranked wrestler at 174 lbs, followed with a pin of Albert Urias and the Cowboys were off and running. They won the next three bouts by major decision and jumped out to a 31-0 lead before Rohlfing stemmed the tide at 149 lbs.
 
Rohlfing's defeated #20 Jaron Jensen in a surgical performance that saw him in complete control from start to finish. After a scoreless first period, Rohlfing began the second period on top and quickly turned his advantage into four nearfall points. The CSUB senior then rode Jensen for almost the entire two minute period in a dominating display of tactical wrestling. He picked up a penalty point and increased his ride-time advantage in the third en route to a 6-0 decision.
 
"Russell dictated pace and was composed against a good opponent," said Rivera. "He competed hard, was completely focused and wrestled a complete match to pick up a key victory for himself."
 
Jensen was ranked two-spots ahead of Rohlfing in the first Coaches rankings of the season, released earlier today. It was a critical victory for Rohlfing, who is looking to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for a fourth time.
 
Freshman Chance Rich wrestled well at 133 lbs against sixth-ranked Montori Bridges. Rich nearly grabbed an early take downs on multiple occasions, but the Wyoming junior showed his experience and side-stepped each of Rich's first-period advances. Bridges appeared to have taken control of the match, but Rich scored a takedown midway through the third period to pull within two. The Roadrunner freshman carried much of the remaining action but ran out of time before he could tie up the match. A ride-time point made the final margin 7-4.  
 
The `Runners are back in action on Sunday at Northern Colorado beginning at 1 p.m. Pacific. Rich and Rohlfing will likely each get another shot at ranked opponents. Rich is expected to draw #18 Mosha Schwarts, while Rohlfing is scheduled to face #12 Andrew Alirez.
