Wyoming, Northern Colorado on Tap for CSUB

Bakersfield, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team heads to the Rocky Mountain region for dual meets at Wyoming and Northern Colorado on Jan. 24 and 26, respectively. Roadrunner wrestlers could face as many as 11 ranked opponents between the two weekend matches in one of their stiffest tests of the season. CSUB does enter with notable momentum of its own, having easily dispatched Duke, 41-4, last Sunday.

"We have an exciting opportunity in front of us this weekend," said Head Coach Manny Rivera. "It won't be easy, but we are wrestling well and wrestling aggressively. If that continues, we'll be in a great position to win some key matches and show well as a team."

Bakersfield hosted both opponents a season ago, dropping a narrow decision to Northern Colorado, 17-16, before falling 25-6 to then #11 Wyoming. Those results gave Wyoming a slight, 4-3, lead in the all-time series between the two schools, while CSUB lost to Northern Colorado for just the second in nine overall meetings.

"Familiarity allows us to make certain adjustments but for the most part we want to stay true to ourselves in terms of the aggressive style and the level of competitiveness we hope to bring to each match," Rivera added.

Wyoming enters Friday's dual with a 4-7 record this season. The Cowboys split a weekend trip to the Dakota's, rolling past North Dakota State, 34-6, before falling at South Dakota State, 17-16.

Seniors Wyatt Gerl and Russell Rohlfing each grabbed wins in last season's match-up with Wyoming.

Gerl rallied in the third period of his match, reversing Jed Loveless before adding a pair of nearfall points to pick up three points at 157 lbs. He is 7-8 this season and is expected to face off with Wyoming's Dewey Krueger (14-10), Friday.

Rohlfing defeated Jaron Jensen, 11-4, at 149 lbs. The two grapplers will likely scrap again this season. Rohlfing is currently 13-7 and finds himself at #27 in Track Wrestling's 149 lb rankings, while Jensen sits at #20 with a 16-10 mark.

Another projected match-up between ranked opponents is expected at 133 lbs, when Chance Rich faces off with #6 Montorie Bridges. Bridges is 23-3 on the year and offers up a stern test for the CSUB rookie. Rich already has a win over a highly ranked opponent to his credit. He pinned #11 Sammy Alvarez of Rutgers on Nov. 11.

The Cowboys could also submit ranked athletes at 174 lbs, 184 lbs, 197 lbs and 285 lbs.

Jarrod Snyder and Albert Urias each faced their probable upcoming opponent at the Cliff Keen Invitational earlier this season. Snyder fell to #26 Brian Andrews in the first-round of the prestigious tournament, while #10 Hayden Hastings eliminated Urias.

Roadrunner junior Dominic Ducharme got back to his winning ways with a major decision victory over Duke's Vincent Baker. His performance will be critical to the CSUB cause this weekend beginning with his projected Friday night match-up with Wyoming's #27 Stephen Buchanan.

Josh Loomer also draws a ranked Cowboy in #32 Tate Samuelson.

At 141 lbs Angelo Martinoni could face Chase Zollman. Zollman may be familiar to Bakersfield fans, having dropped an early-season bout to CSUB's Noah Blakley-Beanes.

Northern Colorado has dropped four straight duals to fall to tough competition, falling to 1-4 on the season. Last weekend they were swept by a pair of top-15 opponents in Oklahoma State and Northern Iowa.

The Bears are led by #18 Mosha Schwartz and #12 Andrew Alirez who wrestle at 133 lbs and 149 lbs, respectively, and offer up another set of challenges for CSUB's ranked wrestlers Rich and Rohlfing.

Ducharme will face his second ranked opponent of the weekend as well. He is likely to grapple with #20 Jacob Seely in a rematch of Seely's, 8-3, victory at the Cliff Keen in Las Vegas.

Ranked wrestlers may also appear for the Bears at 184 lbs and 285 lbs.

The two teams split their ten matches at last season's dual meet in Bakersfield. Rohlfing, Thalin and Ducharme each grabbed winning decisions in the meet.

Following the dual with Northern Colorado the Roadrunners will return to California for a battle with Central Valley rival Fresno State on Feb. 2, followed by four straight duals with PAC 12 competition.
