CSUB Opens Season with Home and Home Against CSUN

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2019-20 golf season is set to get underway for CSU Bakersfield as the Roadrunners are preparing for back-to-back duels with future Big West Conference foe CSUN. CSUB will meet the Matadors in Moorpark, Calif. on Sunday, Sept. 8, before the two teams compete again in Bakersfield on Monday, Sept. 9.

"This is a really exciting time of the year for our team," said Meghan Thomason, CSUB's Director of Golf. "Our student-athletes are getting settled into their classes and we're also jumping back into competition. We have been working hard this fall to get our game tuned up for these first two duels. We will learn a lot from these 36 holes and take those lessons into the rest of the fall season."

The `Runners and Matadors have met for a golf duel all but one year since 2014-15. Bakersfield is looking for its first win over CSUN since the 2016-17 season when the `Runners edged the Matadors by one stroke at Bakersfield Country Club.

CSUB will be led by a trio of seniors this season: Macey Mills, Brandi Borjon, and Vanessa Watkins. The group brings a load of collegiate golfing experience with Mills returning as Bakersfield's lowest scorer from 2018-19. The Bakersfield native (Liberty HS) averaged 78.72 strokes per round last season and looks to close her collegiate career with her best season yet.

Borjon came on strong in the back half of the 2018-19 season as the Bakersfield College transfer began to figure out the Division I courses. Watkins, who transferred in from Santa Barbara City College, was Bakersfield's No. 2 option last year and will provide helpful insight to the younger `Runners.

Returning to the squad for their second seasons are juniors Allie Crawley and Kaleigh Irey. The pair transferred to CSUB from Bakersfield College and Taft College, respectively, midway through the 2018-19 season. Both women are looking forward to their first full year under Thomason's tutelage.

Rounding out the 2019-20 `Runner squad is the lone freshman on the roster, Gillian Galicia. A Bakersfield native (Liberty HS), as is the rest of the team, Galicia was named the 2019 All-Area Golfer of the Year by The Bakersfield Californian and was a great pickup for CSUB.

The `Runners and Matadors will kick off the season on Sunday, Sept. 8, with a round of golf at Moorpark Country Club. The following day, the two teams will get a rematch at Bakersfield Country Club with another 18 holes on the agenda. Fans are welcome to come and cheer on the `Runners at BCC on Monday, but country club attire and etiquette are required. The first tee time on Monday is scheduled for high noon.
