Seniors Pace `Runners to Open Battle at Old Works

ANACONDA, Mont. – A pair of Roadrunner seniors led CSU Bakersfield's golf team on the first day of competition at the Battle at Old Works. Macey Mills and Brandi Borjon carded identical 36-hole scores of 153 while helping the `Runners post a pair of solid scores at Old Works Golf Club.

"I'm happy with the way today unfolded," said Meghan Thomason, Bakersfield's Director of Golf. "There are a few things we have been working on individually in practice and I'm really happy to see that work translate to competition so early in the fall."

Thomason went on to highlight some of CSUB's individual performances from Monday: "I'm really proud of Kaleigh for shooting her low collegiate round in the first round and Brandi and Macey set the tone and were consistent all day, which is to be expected from our seniors. We are going to have to battle the elements tomorrow, but I think this group is up to the challenge judging by their positivity today."

Borjon shot a season-low round for any `Runner with a score of 75 (+3) before wrapping up Day 1 of Battle at Old Work with a 78. The senior's two-round total of 153 strokes (+9) tied with Mills at 26th in the 61-woman field. Mills (76-77, +9) carded five birdies on the day while posting Bakersfield's lowest score in Round 2.

Junior Kaleigh Irey played a very steady first round and tied Borjon's 75 to open the day. The three-over-par card lowered Irey's collegiate best round by eight strokes. The Bakersfield native wrapped up the day with 156 strokes (75-81, +12), just three behind her senior teammates.

Freshman Gillian Galicia, playing in her first collegiate tournament, started slowly with a first-round 89, but improved with an 80 in Round 2. The second-round score was Galicia's season-best by five strokes. Junior Allie Crawley's score of 87 in the first round counted towards CSUB's team score and she finished Day 1 with 175 strokes (87-88).

As a team, CSUB used 313 strokes (+25) in Round 1, carding Bakersfield's best round of the year and what would have been the fifth-best of the 2018-19 season. The `Runners needed three more strokes in the second round and currently rank eighth of ten teams with 629 strokes (+53) after the first 36 holes.

The `Runners and the rest of the field will wrap up Battle at Old Works on Tuesday with one final round of golf. The teams are scheduled to begin teeing off at 7:30 a.m. (PT). Rain is expected for Tuesday, but the squad is expected to be able to play through the inclement weather in Montana.
