Beach Team Splits on Senior Day

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – On Senior Day at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center, the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team defeated Ottawa University (Ariz.) 3-2 in the opening match and fell to No. 13 Loyola Marymount in the second. 

"One thing we have been telling the girls is to play for each other and fight for each other," said CSUB Head Coach Cesar Benatti.  "That was exactly what happened.  In the first match, we had two teams battle back to win their matches.  It was nice to build that feeling and that confidence.  In the second match, LMU was really aggressive with its serve and we couldn't quite figure out how to neutralize that.  Overall, I was happy with the way we played.  Even against LMU there were some glimpses of us doing some really big things."

Ally Barber, Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner all played their final matches in Bakersfield on Saturday. 

"Ally had a really great moment today.  She's grown a lot with Rafa and these last three weekends she has been playing really well," said Benatti.  "Matti and Bri do a really good job of controlling the game.  They have everything they need to be successful."

CSUB 3, OUAZ 2
The `Runners claimed the opening match of the day because of the depth of their lineup.  It was all tied at 1-1 after the first set of matches.  At the No. 4 spot, Brooke Boiseau and Emily Hansen captured the first win of the day with a 21-5, 21-17 victory.  In the second set of matches, CSUB came out hot as Rafa Bonifacio and Ally Barber won in straight sets at No. 5 and Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova finished off the Spirit at No. 3.

LMU 5, CSUB 0
It was a tough second match of the day for the Roadrunners as they fell to the No. 13 team in the country.  Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat nearly pulled off a second set victory but were outlasted by the Lions 25-23.  Rafa Bonifacio and Ally Barber also put up a tough battle scoring 27 points combined in their two sets.

The Roadrunners (7-12) will be back in action next Friday when they head to Northridge to take on CSUN and Concordia (Calif.) in the regular season finale.
