Beach Season Ends at Big West Championship

MALIBU, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team knocked off Sacramento State for the second time this season, but saw its season end with a loss to CSUN in the third round of the Big West Championship Tournament.  The Roadrunners opened the day with a loss to No. 12 Long Beach State.

It was a tough start to the championship tournament for the Roadrunners.  Ally Barber and Rafa Bonifacio got off on the right foot with a 21-19 victory in the opening set at the No. 5 spot, but ran out of steam and dropped the second and final set.  Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova threatened to win the second set at the no. 3 spot in the lineup, but came up just short

For the second time this season, the Roadrunners were dominant in a victory over the Hornets.  With the win today, Bakersfield (9-15) eclipsed last season's win total of eight.  Earlier this year, Bakersfield beat Sacramento State 4-1 at the Big West Challenge.  Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner battled back from 1-0 deficit to squeak out a 21-19 second victory and clinched the win with a 15-11 victory in the final set.  Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat narrowly won the first, but dropped the second set to set up a 15-11 win in the final frame.  Brooke Boiseau and Emily Hansen blew past the Hornets at No. 4 and only allowed them to score 15 points in the two sets.  Boiseau finished the season with 11 victories to lead the team and tie for 10th in single-season history.

Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner beat the Matadors for the fifth time this season at the top spot in the lineup.  The senior duo capped their Roadrunner careers with a 21-10, 21-11 sweep of CSUN.  DeGarmo finished her Roadrunner career sixth on the CSUB wins list with 21 and is one of just six Roadrunners to have two double-digit victory seasons.
