`Runners Knock off Sac State at Big West Challenge

PISMO BEACH, Calif. – On the second day of the Big West Challenge, the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team earned a 4-1 win over Sacramento State.  The Roadrunners also took on nationally-ranked Long Beach State and Hawaii and lost by 5-0 scores. 

Long Beach State 5, CSUB 0
Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova and Emily Hansen and Brooke Boiseau both pushed the No. 9 49ers to three sets.  Wicks and Makonova won the first set 21-19 and nearly won the final set to take the match, but lost by a 15-12 score at the No. 3 pair.  At the No. 4 spot, Hansen and Boiseau also took the first set 21-15 and went into extras in the third set, but couldn't win the final set and lost 17-15.

CSUB 4, Sacramento State 1
 The Roadrunners finally came through with a victory in their second match of the day.  Two of CSUB's four victories in the match went to three sets.  Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner took their first set 21-19, but dropped the second set 21-11.  The top `Runner pair squeaked out a 15-13 victory in the final set to earn the point.  Emily Hansen and Brooke Boiseau dropped their first set 21-17, but came back with a 21-18 victory in the second set and dominated the final set 15-8.  Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova scored a victory at No. 3 and Ally Barber and Rafa Bonifcaio also won at No. 5.

Hawaii 5, CSUB 0
Going up against the No. 6 team of the country, the `Runners gave Hawaii a tough match in all five positions.  At four of the five positions, CSUB scored 17 points.  Emily Hansen and Brooke Boiseau put up the best effort as they scored 16 and 17 points in their two sets.

The Roadrunners (6-11) will be back at home next Saturday when they host Ottawa (Ariz.) and nationally-ranked Loyola Marymount for Senior Day.
