`Runners Compete in Big West Challenge

PISMO BEACH, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team competed in the annual Big West Challenge on Friday in Pismo Beach.  The Roadrunners lost matches to No. 7 Cal Poly, CSUN and UC Davis on the first day of the two-day event. 

Cal Poly 5, CSUB 0
It was a tough start to the day for the Roadrunners against the seventh-ranked Mustangs.  Freshman Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat scored 18 points in the second set, which was the closest the Roadrunners came to getting on the board.  Emily Hansen and Brooke Boiseau put forth a strong effort, but were defeated 21-14, 21-16 in their first match of the season as a tandem.

CSUN 4, CSUB 1
Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner improved to 3-0 against the Matadors on the year with a tough three-set victory at the top spot.  The `Runners' second pair of Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat nearly kept their record perfect against CSUN, but were defeated in three sets.  Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova pushed CSUN's No. 3 pair with 19 points in both sets, but were unable to get over the hump.  Rafa Bonifacio and Ally Barber suffered the same fate as they put up 18 and 19 points in their two sets at No. 5.

UC Davis 3, CSUB 2
It was the bottom of the lineup that did damage against the Aggies in the final match of the day.  Emily Hansen and Brooke Boiseau picked up their first win of the season, scoring a 21-15, 17-21, 15-10 victory at the No. 4 spot.  At No. 5, Rafa Bonifacio and Ally Barber added their fourth win of the season with a 23-21, 21-15 decision.  Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat nearly won the match for CSUB, but were defeated in three sets at No. 2.

CSUB (5-9) will be back in action tomorrow in Pismo.  The `Runners will go up against No. 9 Long Beach State, No. 6 Hawaii and Sacramento State.  The second day of the two-day Challenge will start at 9:00 a.m.
