CSUB Plays First 36 Holes in Busy Week

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – A cold, windy, and wet day at Boulder Creek Golf Club meant a tough 36 holes of golf for CSU Bakersfield and the rest of the field at the Jackrabbit Invitational.

"Conditions were tough for everyone today, but that isn't an excuse for our play today," said Meghan Thomason, CSUB's Director of Golf. "I saw a lot of mental errors and lack of commitment from the team. The wind got into our heads early on and it snowballed from there. We had a good talk after the second round and I think the team is in a much better headspace heading into tomorrow."

Round 1

Redshirt senior Sara Scheidt opened the round with a solid start, carding a birdie at the turn to lead the `Runners with a mark of four-over-par at that point. Scheidt went on to the finish the round as Bakersfield's leader with an 82 (+10) while junior college transfer Brandi Borjon came in with an 86.

Junior Vanessa Watkins finished one stroke behind Borjon in Round 1 while Jenni Chun and Macey Mills tied with identical scores of 90. CSUB's scoring four finished with 345 strokes (+57) to open the tournament.

Despite sitting at the back of the 12-team pack, the `Runners were not the only team to struggle under the less-than-ideal conditions. The Xavier Musketeers led all squads with a team round of 312 (+24), a score CSUB bested twice just a month ago.

Round 2

Watkins, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., put together a solid first nine holes in the second round at three-over-par. Scheidt, who hails from Clovis, Calif., surged to the end of Round 2 and again led CSUB with an 83. Watkins came in with an 86 while Chun carded an 88. Borjon and Mills both tallied scores of 89 to close out the first day of competition.

Day 1

Scheidt wrapped up the first day of competition with 165 strokes (+21) and is currently tied for 33rd in the field of 72 student-athletes. Watkins finished eight strokes behind Watkins while Borjon closed out the day with a score of 175. Chun used 178 strokes on Day 1 while Mills carded a 179.

As a team, the `Runners sit in 12th place with a two-round total of 691 strokes (+115).

Tomorrow

The `Runners and the rest of the field will wrap up the Jackrabbit Invitational on Tuesday with another 7:45 a.m. (PT) shotgun start.
