Wyoming Downs `Runners in Icardo

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Fresh off of a thrilling victory over No. 22-ranked Stanford last Sunday, the CSU Bakersfield wrestling team was unable to capitalize on the momentum, falling 25-6 to No. 11 Wyoming on Sunday inside the Icardo Center. 

`Runner wrestlers Russell Rohlfing and Wyatt Gerl produced CSUB's two victories on the night.  Wrestling at 149 pounds, Rohlfing, who is ranked 20th in the nation, nearly put four points on the board for CSUB, but came up with an 11-4 decision.  The redshirt junior led 3-2 after the first three minutes by producing an escape and a takedown and pushed the lead to 5-3 with another takedown in the second.  Rohlfing took control of the match in the third with two more takedowns in the final frame. 

It was an important victory for Gerl after he had been just 1-5 in his last six matches.  Trailing 1-0 after the second period, the junior reversed Jed Loveless' control with 1:24 remaining and picked up two nearfall points shortly after for the 4-2 win. 

A trio of matches were there for the taking for the Roadrunners, but the brakes just didn't go their way tonight.  One of the more exciting matches of the night was at 133 pounds between No. 17 Sean Nickell and returning All-American and No. 10-rated Montorie Bridges.  It looked as though Nickell would come away victorious as he led by two late in the match, but Brides escaped with 25 seconds remaining and took down Nickell with 12 seconds left to earn the win. 

Bryan Battisto held a 3-2 lead at the end the second period at 174 pounds, but Wyoming's Hayden Hastings reversed his control to start the third.  The Cowboy produced a takedown to go with over four minutes of riding time to earn the 8-5 decision. 

At 125 pounds, No. 16 Cole Verner beat Eddie Flores 8-3, but the score didn't indicate how close the match was as Flores came close to a couple takedowns, but couldn't finish against the nationally-rated junior. 

The Roadrunners will compete for the final time at home next Saturday when they host Fresno State for the Feud on the Field at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's dual will be Senior Day on the Main Soccer Field.  For tickets, call 661-654-BLUE.
