`Runners Hit the Beach on Friday and Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – It will be a busy weekend at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.  The 2019 CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team will kickoff the season on Friday when it hosts Irvine Valley College and Gavilan College.  On Saturday, the Roadrunners welcome Cal State LA and Vanguard University.

The `Runners are coming off of a solid 2018 season that saw them win eight matches, which is tied for the second-most in school history.  CSUB also claimed fourth at the Big West Championships with a 2-2 record, finishing ahead of CSUN and Sacramento State.

Eight of the 15 players on the roster are newcomers, so it will be a young group for third-year coach Cesar Benatti

"The team is pretty young," said Benatti.  "The returners are doing a good job helping the players that are new to the game.  They are developing well and learning the game pretty quickly.  This is a group that grinds.  They have a great attitude and very hard-working."

Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner are CSUB's top returners and will be counted on heavily with an influx of new players.  Degarmo won 11 matches with Emily Lopes last season, which is tied for 10th in school history.  Mariner was a part of nine victories, eight of them coming with Aleksandra Djordjevic

CSUB will need to find a way to replace Sydney Haynes, the top player in school history.  Haynes accrued 43 victories in her career, which is eight more than second place Mariah Alvidrez. Also departed are the team's second-best pair Sarah Garrow and Desiree Sukhov, as well as Lopes and Djordjevic who were regulars in the starting lineup.  Emily Hansen, who paired with Haynes last season will also miss time due to an injury from the indoor season.

Ally Barber was a regular last season at the No. 5 position and split her time there with Krista Hernandez and Sidney WicksBrooke Boiseau and Hannah Manzanares played sparingly last year, but will likely have a bigger role this spring.

The only player on the roster that plays strictly on the beach and not on the hardwood is freshman Cameron Solberg.  She is already standing out to Benatti.

"She is doing an awesome job. She's becoming a really solid player," said Benatti.  "She did a lot of individual work in the fall and now that we are actually seeing her playing, she's doing a great job.  Her game has taken a big step up."

Milica Vukobrat enters the year with some experience, while the other fresh faces are mainly new to the sport.

The `Runners will being the season against Irvine Valley at 10:00 a.m. on Friday and will take on Gavilan at 2:00 p.m.  On Saturday, CSUB will do battle with Cal State LA at 10:00 a.m. and Vanguard at 2:00 p.m.
