Wrestling Welcomes No. 11 Wyoming

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Fresh off an upset of No. 22-ranked Stanford last Sunday, the CSU Bakersfield wrestling team will look to knock off a second consecutive ranked opponent when they host No. 11 Wyoming on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. inside the Icardo Center.

With six wrestlers ranked nationally and a lofty team ranking, the Cowboys provide great opportunities for the Roadrunners to produced some signature victories.

"It's another great opportunity for some of our guys to wrestle ranked opponents," said CSUB Assistant Coach Luke Smith.  "It's a quality team.  We had a good dual against Stanford, but it's not just about having one good day.  You have to be able to put multiple good days together to place at the NCAA Tournament so we will see how we will respond."

Looking to make a splash this Sunday will be reigning Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week Sean Nickell and Dominic Ducharme.  Nickell lost to his projected opponent Montorie Bridges 7-4 in last season's dual between the two clubs, before Bridges went on to earn All-America honors. Ducharme will take on freshman Tate Samuelson who just cracks the top 20 in the national rankings.  Ducharme enters Sunday's dual on a five-match winning streak, but has yet to defeat a ranked wrestler this season.  The Cowboy lineup also features ranked wrestlers at 125, 141, 165 and 197 pounds.

Series History
After six duals in the all-time series between the two programs, the Roadrunners and the Cowboys are all square at 3-3.  Wyoming has won the last two duals, including a 28-9 victory in Laramie last season.  CSUB's last victory over the Cowboys was a 23-14 result on Feb. 11, 2000 in the Icardo Center.

Oddly, when the two teams dualed last season the Cowboys were also ranked 11th in the country.  The Roadrunners' Dominic Ducharme is the only returner to record a victory against Wyoming last season.  Ducharme nearly earned a major decision over Chaz Polson, but settled for a 13-6 final score.  There will be two rematches from last season's dual.  At 133 pounds, Sean Nickell will look to avenge a 7-4 defeat to Montorie Bridges, while at 165, Jacob Thalin looks to have a better showing after losing by technical fall to Branson Ashworth.

Nickell Named Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week, Rises in National Rankings
CSU Bakersfield redshirt senior Sean Nickell has been named the Pac-12 Conference Wrestler of the Week after his upset of No. 14 Matthew Schmitt of West Virginia.  Nickell has also risen to as high as No. 17 in the country in the national rankings.

It was an impressive weekend for the 133-pound Nickell who allowed just one point and didn't get taken down in three matches.  His weekend began with the upset over Schmitt, in which he escaped Schmitt's control in the third period and added a point for riding time to earn the victory.  In his other two victories, he was dominant.  The Bakersfield native heated up after a scoreless first period against Utah Valley's Isaiah Delgado, scoring a reversal and a two-point nearfall in the second period.  In the third, he took down Delgado, had a four-point nearfall and earned a point for riding time to record the 11-0 major decision.  Against Stanford, Nickell needed just 5:41 to earn the technical fall over Anthony Le.  He produced takedowns in the first and second periods and had three four-point nearfalls in the bout.

With the weekend sweep, Nickell improved his overall record to 19-7 and ranks 32nd in CSUB history in career victories with 79 wins.  The redshirt senior also moved up to No. 17 in the country in the InterMat national rankings after previously rankings 20th.  Nickell also reentered the FloWrestling Top 20 at No. 18.

CSUB's Russell Rohlfing lost to a pair of nationally-ranked competitors over the weekend and fell to No. 20 in the FloWrestling ranks.  Rohlfing also dropped out of The Open Mat rankings after being rated No. 16 a week ago.

Ducharme Stays Hot
Dominic Ducharme's 18 wins ranks second on the team to only nationally-ranked Sean Nickell, but after a tough start to the season, the redshirt sophomore has won 13 of his last 17 matches including the last five in a row.  Since finishing sixth at the Southern Scuffle, the Windsor, Calif. native has won dual matches against Cal Poly, Northern Colorado, West Virginia, Utah Valley and Stanford.  Possibly more importantly, Ducharme is undefeated in Pac-12 action and is looking to improve over his third-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships last season.  He has already matched his win total from last season, when he went 18-15 as a redshirt freshman.  The Roadrunners are counting on Ducharme as they look to improve on their postseason from a season ago.
