Gerl Leads Bakersfield at RR Open

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield wrestling program put together a solid showing in the Roadrunner Open on Sunday. Wyatt Gerl took second at 157 while three others placed Top 3 of their respective weight classes.

Gerl started the tournament with a win by fall, then a 9-3 decision, before he tallied another win by fall to advance to the semifinal round. It was in the semis that Gerl was challenged for the first time, but he took the 4-2 decision over Stanford's Tyler Eischens.

Gerl came up short in the 157 first place match as Jacob Wright of Fresno State was able to steal the 2-0 decision over him.

Dom Ducharme (197), Jacob Thalin (165) and Russell Rohlfing (149) came in third at their respective weight classes.

Bakersfield kept its scoring margin close in most of the bouts competed in but head coach Manny Rivera saw it as missed opportunity. "We're losing close matches – tough matches. What we lack or what we struggle in right now is the ability to find a way to win"

"I think we competed hard" added Rivera. "For the most part, the effort was there from the majority of our team."
